Alibra I know

and Mottled Javas too but I promised my H that other than the New Hampshire pullets I will be getting from Deb, there will be no additions other what we get from broodies hatching eggs. He agrees that every one who decides they want to be mamas should be allowed to be BUT if I have a broody and the folks at Uruch/Turnland can ship me some chicks in time I am not above bypassing the setting stage and going straight to the brooding

I realize the odds of that are slim so have hatching eggs lined up for both breeds.

I think Ron may have called in the order already are you wanting in on one in the future...don't think I will have enough broodies for 25 chicks

ETA...@ronott1 Ron how many are you short?

Yes, the kids got it, but not as bad as the adults that didn't get vaccinated. My son really just had fevers, but my daughter has the fever and respiratory symptoms. DS has had 2 flu vaccines via the nasal vaccine not the shot ( one each year). My DD just got her first via the nasal vaccine a few months ago. I read on the CDC that they both should of received a second dose one month later to insure immunity. The pediatrician didn't say that.

We had a flu discussion at a lunch today which made for an interesting debate. Half the people at the table had the flu shot and half did not and each group had strong opinions supporting their decision.

I personally have never gotten a shot, nor have my kids but I am starting to think it may be a good idea. One person at the table said that her pediatrician told her that their office is much less busy during flu season now than before flu shots were available. I admit, I am one of those people paranoid of drug companies but having a doctor put things into perspective has helped me think maybe the flu shot is not just a big scam like I previously thought.

I am happy your kids did not get it that bad. I can't imagine having to take care of others when you're too weak to take care of yourself.

I am not big on getting flu shots either. About 5 years ago DH and I got a flu shot that made us both pretty sick. I am still worried about getting shots, so that's why we opted for the nasal vaccine for our kids. Rationalized by the more natural route of priming the immune system for a respiratory type virus. Injecting mass produced vaccine ( mainly made from chicken eggs) into the body worries me.

Alright!! Thank you.

Your feed out there is twice what I pay for it here!!! I had a problem when I went from chick starter to adult feed. Seemed like they were throwing more of it around than they were eating! So I started using pellets instead, was surprised how much of a difference it made! They ate better without throwing it all over the place! I feed th girls (and Redman) Dumor brand layer pellets. Also give them Scratch feed in the morning and two or three times a week mix in a cup of oyster shell calcium. During cold months they get BOSS with their scratch and dried meal worms for treats a couple times a week. I guess my birds are spoiled because I also pick up greens from produce dept (catch the mgr of dept while he's trimming carrots, cabbage or collard, and kale) get it at major discounts! They get that couple times a week too. My girls can't get out t forage much this time of year because is usually snow covered so the greens are important!!! And because they can't get out much I have a "parrot" cup hanging in their run with grit if they want it. Spoiled aren't they... Lol

Yes! I am so relieved. Thank you. I am trying to get them away from the mash to the crumble!!

Corn all the time is not supposed to be ideal for chickens. From what I have found, Wheat is the only grain that chickens can have all the time. Wheat is also close to layer in protein and can be used to make chicken feed bills a bit lower. Azure sells Organic wheat, 50#s for $14.00. Organic layer is usually $34.00 for 50 #s. The chickens do very will fed this way too.

If you change their feed and they seem hesitant, give them a couple of days. They will get over it and eat the new food.

I agree! Pellets are great for the layer Flock. The Freedom GMO free feed from King Feed is not available in pellet form as a grower. I get it, when in stock, for 22.5 for 50 pounds. Purina is about $16.00 for 50 pounds but for some reason my layers eat more of the Purina feed.

It does not look like there are are enough for the order.

if there are still folks wanting to order chicks from Urch, i can order as many silver campines as needed to fill in the order to 25, as long as i don't need to go over 10 or so. our idea of a Sonoma/Marin order hasn't really worked out, so happy to join another order if others still want to get chicks too! (and, i can live without them if it doesn't work out, so no obligation!)

Trish, so glad to see that you're feeling better! this year's flu sounds enormously awful.
