thanks -- like i said, not really gasping, more just opening and closing its beak, but no actual gasping for air. and they've been living in their brooder indoors, in my guest bathroom, on paper towels (not pine shavings yet), with nothing else around but chick starter and water -- so i don't think there's much it could have inhaled. and really, not trying to get *air* -- it seems more like a neurological thing, along with not being able to keep its balance/walk without falling on its right side.

it's sleeping now, perhaps the vitamins will do some good during the night while it rests... at least no one else is standing on it!

happy to report that the little chick is much better this morning! still a *little* unsteady on its feet, but no longer falling over sideways like last night, also no longer making its strange twitches and gaping movements -- and eating and drinking. so, vitamins!! hooray!

I am so happy to hear this. I had vitamin def. issues with the Swedish Flower Hen chicks. It was weird because it was only the SFH and only the male chicks. Coincidence.. perhaps.

The chicks were older than your bird when they got afflicted, usually 6 + weeks. It was scary because at first I thought it was Mareks but the more I read I realized a vitamin deficiency made more sense. I decided to try vitamins and never saw the problem again. I now give all my chicks vitamins from the day they hatch til they are 8 weeks old.

I also switched to non-medicated chick started. Medicated feed blocks the absorption of vitamin B (Thiamin). Vitamin B deficiencies affect the nervous system.

Rain!pouring drenching n loud rain pounding everywhere! .The ducks have never seen it before it's too funny.

i've not been using medicated chick starter, either -- they are getting King Freedom. but i will start being more liberal with vitamins, too! my previous hatches i started the first few days with save-a-chick in their water, but i seem to have run out & haven't been to the store since these kids hatched.

does anyone know whether it would be remotely effective to put poly-vi-sol in their water?

Laura I get the vitamins in the packets that does not say save a chick and one packet lasts 6 months or more.it is cheap enough to put it is every day. It's supposed to make the water light yellow at maintenence levels.

Ever since that scare where Starseed got sever wry neck in such a short time I give silkie clutches nutri drench instead at least once a week
I think it's easier to digest. I'm going to start giving vegamite too. We'll to the asults. It is supposed to help with hatch ability all the right vitamins in a digestable format.

Save a chick, rooster booster are vitamins that go into the water and work well. An alternative to baby drops is liquid B vitamins.

Big Ole Bird by Southland Organics is great to give to chicks. You can start them on it at 5 days old. https://www.southlandorganics.com/probiotics-chickens-big-ole-bird

It makes egg shells harder too

I have made and purchased roll out nest boxes.

This one sits in the back yard unused

I also have a 4 hole roll out nest box the is stored in my shed. The eggs broke in it any way so it was a big waste of time.

Sen a PM if interested in either. I plan on chopping up the wooden one and using it for fire wood.

yes, i know that there ARE vitamins that one can put in the water, but when i bought Poly-vi-sol, it only came in a ginormous two-pack, so i've got tons of it -- hence wondering whether anyone's ever heard of putting it directly in their water, instead of administering drop by drop on their beaks...?

I think Mario will be good. The best quote I heard was from him. "Well you can't really count babies when it comes to counting how many chickens you have". And he was quite convinced this was the truth! Well played Shantih, well played! I think you can get him to see this your way as well.;)
I don't know Why this is still here but omg these girls are gorgous. Now to sell him on going to Sacramento tomorrow to get a jubilee rooster.

Ron put a bit of carpet in the bottom of the roll out nest. That keeps em from braking. I need to give more big of bird to the girls. But how to make sure they drink not spill it hrm... Laura I didn't see that you have a poly in hand so to speak. I have never been able to find it so I don't have actual experiance with how strong it is but I bet a Google with water dosage poly would come up with some info on google. Sorry I'm not more help.
