California - Northern

@Flowers of Abbawell i live way up north in cali and are nights here are usuaally in the 20-30s. would u know where i could get some? Id rather not hatch serama eggs because id be afraid id screw them up somehow xD id be fine with 2-3 chicks though

That depends on... Are you closer to the Bay Area or carson city Nevada. I'm in south Lake Tahoe but have family in the bay. I will be stopping by to see Chiquita for beautiful birds then. But there are several people with serama on the Nevadans thread if your closer to them... I think it's rough to ship smaller eggs like serama and quail. I like to pick them up . However I hear of some good hatches on shipped once and a while. I'd order many extras though. IMHO

This is my second failed hatch. This one was $90 worth of eggs. The last one was $30. It's a very big loss for me.

Ok from now on weigh the eggs. And have we calibrated all your thermometers? In anything other then an exemplary incubator however you have to expect on adverage 30% on shipped eggs.
Im sorry mt first hatches were terribad and it is always heartbreaking.

I'm just glad that I didn't have to learn about it by losing one of my girls. That would be devastating! I have some diatomaceous earth that I will be adding to the pen in the place they like to dust bathe too as soon as things dry up a bit. Does anyone know if it safe to use Sevin dust on a broody hen on eggs? If so, should I just dust the nests or put it on the hen too?

What do your guy's chickens do when it rains?

I have a covered pen so mine just stay in there when they can stay dry. I have noticed that now that the rain has started I seem to have 3 broodies though. In addition to my blue Wyandotte that I just gave eggs to, my black Cochin banty and one of my BC Marans both are spending a lot of time in the nests on other birds eggs... Not sure if the cold, wet weather has anything to do with it or if it is coincidence.

thats a bummer. what kind of incubator do you have?
I had a tough time with shipped eggs till I got my R-com but local eggs seem to hatch well in my foam gators I have had.

Yeah, see, that's what mine used to do. At the old house.

But we just moved and today I gave them the option of free ranging at the new place. I guess the excitement of being let out for only the 3rd time at the new house was much more rewarding than staying dry, because I currently have a flock of chickens that are all soaked to the bone...I'll have to share the pictures I took, it's pretty funny.

Mine did that when I let them out the other day when the rain was still pretty light. They were all soaked that evening too. I am not letting them out while the rain is so heavy though because I know they won't have time to dry out
