California - Northern

I even had the baggie in the chicken coop. He walked in and saw it. I try hiding all of my animal stuff from him but he seems to find it. Like I had peanut butter set aside to fill the dog's "Kong" toy. In another room... in a cupboard. Then I walk in and see him getting ready to make a sandwich. I said "where did you get that?". When he answered, I hesitated to tell him the truth cause I knew he wouldn't like my answer. But I let him know-  that was the dog's peanut butter. I caught him in time before he ate it. He was NOT happy.:lau
Like if I put something in an odd place, that should be a clue.
But the dead chicken in an ice chest… Oh Man!! I'd have to hide that really well

Well YEAH...but the carcass WAS triple bagged! All in the name of poultry science of course.

Liz and Karen...If you all make a play date can I come play too?

I only live 15 minutes from Karen. And now that I've invited myself, ignore it if it sounds pathetic and needy.
Hey, I'll come play too! Modesto area get together sounds fun

I just received a call from Debbie Belt from Belt Hatchery. I appreciate the time she took to call me as I am very aware that she could have ignored my request for understanding of the brown egg laying Ameracaunas.

She explained the same thing that Liz posted earlier. In their brochure, it states that the genetics of those birds does produce some brown egg layers. Unfortunately, all of mine turned out to be those. Furthermore, when
I purchased the live chicks from the store, I was not made aware if that fact. I do believe however, that ignorance is not an excuse. So...lesson learned. If I want something specific, I need to contact a reputable breeder and see for myself the characteristics that I desire.

My words seem so calm and reflective. But on the inside I'm having a tantrum because I want colored eggs!!
It's SOOOO disappointing to raise a bird for 5 months and then find out you don't have what you want. I too thought I was getting purebred AM's. Ummm NOT! It wasn't until I quite happily posted a picture of the MOST BEAUTIFUL MUTT to the AM Breeders page. Yes, feathers flew as they raced to educate me

Six months later... I finally have some AM's! Not very many - never enough! But working on it :) At least mine lay blue/green eggs. I would be far more ticked otherwise.

Nikki1496....dont give up yet!  Remember how late Alibra's were.  She only got one, but if she had tossed them that one would not have made it!

I'm tossing mine tomorrow on like day 30. I wanted to set a record. Ahahaha.

Day 26 baby!

I of course want all of them!

I was looking for a white egg layer and was going to get La Fleche. I am going to work with getting more Pita Pintas instead. I really love them as a breed.
I love my Pita Pintas! My cockerel Zoro is a hoot! He sleeps in a dog kennel just inside the back door then I let him out with the girls at 8:30 in the morning. He runs all over the yard doing a dance & cluck around each girl he finds but he only dances one circle around each and then it's on to the next one. It's like he sweet talks one but then sees a different one that looks better (or easier) and he's off chasing her. I stood this morning and watched him run all the way across the yard one way dancing around girls and then all the way back across the yard romancing some other girls. Finally, he found one who let him have his way. My older hens don't put up with any funny business from him but he keeps trying. The easy marks are the Wellies, the Lavender Ameraucanas, and the Cream Legbars & CL mixes. So far, he has been a perfect gentleman with me. He hasn't tried to peck me or shown any aggression at all. I don't treat him as a pet but he does get a few pets when I carry him in at night and let him out in the morning. I took all the younger Bresse cockerels to the farm this week and his crowing has decreased in frequency. I am hoping to keep him here now that the Pita Pinta girls are starting to lay.

@ronott1 since the eggs are basically sloshing when i barely turn them is that a sure sign their done? I candled them and they looked like they were forming then just stopped :/
i dont think it would do any good to leave eggs which to me look dead in an incubator. so i guess its time to crack them open and see atleast how far along they got before dying?
How would i know what they died from? Like what would i look for?

This chart helps figure out what happened:

This is what they look like candling:

This one is more graphic. You can tell by the size of the egg yolk how close they were to hatching and what day they were on.

I just candled the eggs and it doesnt look promising. neither is moving inside the eggs and if i move the egg a little both embryos kinda swish back and forth which i dont think they are supposed to do.

im afraid to open them now
If when you turn it, it thunks to the side of the shell like gelatin, it's dead. Had they pipped internally? (can you still see the air sac or not?) If you wish to eggtopsy, make a small hole in the wide end of the egg and carefully peel away.

Quote: Did you get your preliminary results yet?

I have bad tidings . I am showing signs of preterm labor this past week. (Not uncommon for me- trying not to stress) but when my husband found out about the trip he ixnayed my plans. "Going off the mountain without me AND the midwife in wood fords ! No way" He is being reasonable I understand... I just feel really bad to cancel on you. I can PayPal you a compensation for holding this week for me. Please let me know.
No problem, I can hold them a bit longer for you. Just let me know.
