operation reacquaint seems to have been successful

I took my little house chick down last night and slid it under mama. This morning when I checked...the chick she had hatched herself was out in the little enclosure alone and I could here Penny clucking to it. It ran back inside and I saw it go and under her but what I figure is that she didn't follow the other (super cute little red) chick out into the wire enclosure because she was sitting on my baby. She was all fluffed up in the corner buc buc bucking looking totally maternal. So far so good!

I ordered Crele Orps hatching eggs from a breeder last fall. The chicks hatched on 10/3 so they are now 4.5 months old. I have been waiting for them to get the "Orp" look and they haven't. These birds look suspiciously like Golden Cuckoo Marans. Urg...

Sorry but Golden Cuckoo Marans X Orps does not = Crele Orps.

I ordered Crele Orps hatching eggs from a breeder last fall. The chicks hatched on 10/3 so they are now 4.5 months old. I have been waiting for them to get the "Orp" look and they haven't. These birds look suspiciously like Golden Cuckoo Marans. Urg...

Sorry but Golden Cuckoo Marans X Orps does not = Crele Orps.

how frustrating, Deann! and TG, did the mama reject the chick? so sorry to read!

question for the masses: one of my 2.5-week-old isbar chicks has developed a swollen spot right where the top of the beak & start of the comb join -- sort of the bridge of its nose, if that makes any sense. it doesn't act unhealthy at all, but does shake its head or scratch at the spot periodically.

any ideas?

Strange. Could it have scraped it on the wire?

Just taught myself the process for skinning. I've always plucked, but the black pin feathers of wellies are a pain to get out. So I decided to try skinning. The first one took quite a while, until I figured out how to do it right. But after that, I got pretty quick at it. 7 of them processed and in the freezer in 2 hours. Now I'm ready for my meaties to show up next week.

Maybe it's too early to tell Deann. I think the Orps are slow to get that fluffy butt Orp look. I don't have Creole....gees I wish,.................... but do have Blue, Black & Buff. Ypu were not saying they were a Marans cross right? Maybe given more time they will look better. Where did you get them?
