Question: For anyone who has dealt with cocci. I am treating Hope for it. She had it really really bad. She is recovering wonderfully but she still shakes her head and fluffs her feathers quite a bit. Is this normal? She is eating and drinking like a normal chicken now. A lot more energy. But just that one thing that concerns me right now.

Nice to know that Hope is improving daily !

My friend's 1 1/2 yo BO had cocci earlier this summer, as tested by the vet. Penny had lots of broken feathers, esp. her long tail feathers, lost her appetite, and didn't lay. At first the vet thought it was a calcium deficiency, and gave her liquid calium, but when the test came back, the vet gave her oral meds for the cocci. Penny is almost back to her normal self, except she isn't laying at all, and, might never lay again. Her feathers will come back after she molts.

Oddly, the cocci strain was an unusual one, from rat droppings.

Lucas(Gomes Bantams) might take my FBCM Trio. I have a couple of pictures of my Cockerel. He is 18 to 19 weeks old.

head shot. So far a fairly clean comb

So far, nice form and no Squirrel tail. He wanted to get in with the girls, so wold not hold still. Way too young to figure out the final colors.

This is one of the pullets. The picture was taken a month ago.

Ron

Edited to add when the picture of the pullet was taken. Ron
They look great Ron!!

So, it looks like another hen added herself to the broody brigade. So I now have 3 hens raising babies, 2 silkie showgirls that are in for their second round of the year, layed for like 4 weeks in between, 1 orphie and 1 FCBM fghting over nest boxes.
For any battlestar fans out there:
HENS!!! YOUR GOING THE WRONG WAYYYYYY!

Forgive my whining, but when I said I wanted broodies I didn't mean everyone together all the time! With my luck my 3 pullets at point of lay will push out 2 eggs and say WOW! I could sit on those!

Ill have to get some pics of everyone lines up in the nesting boxes puffing up on their golf balls. If only jojo wold try and sit on Candy again....
LOL I heard a lot of people wish for a broody hen and end up with too many broodies! Still, it will be fun to watch! :-)

Going to scrap the Wheaten Penedesenca eggs.. day 22 and nothing on the only 2 that looked to develop. will candle them tonight and then toss em.. ugh
Thanks Usps. I hope you enjoyed what appeared to be your expensive soccer ball.
:-( Sorry to hear that. What a bummer.

She is halfway through treatment. Make sure the treated water is her only source of water. Start her on the medicated feed after the treatment and she should be ok. Watch her though. The cocci rips up their intestines, so it takes time for them to heal up. Until then, they will act like they are hurting inside - well because they are hurting inside.

By the end of the 7 days she will be like a new chick.

Good Job.

Hope laughs that the bin cannot contain her.

Think she'll be ready to join the others tomorrow night?

Excuse my typos. Sent from my iPhone.
I think so. She looks so much better. As long as she can hold her own and if she is jumping out of the bin she should be ok.

I always like to get them out of the house as soon as they are able.

If she stays much longer you might need to get her a chicken diaper--then she could be your house chicken.

Thanks Ron. I am glad that is what you are supposed to it- because that's what I have been doing. I wasn't entirely sure if I should be. Every morning I make up their Corid water spiked with Rooster Booster. All the chickens get it except the EEs. So I will keep on this. :D

Oh man. Diapers? haha Hopefully Hope is feeling right snazzy tomorrow. If I can keep her from pooping all over my bathroom during the day (not holding out 'hope' bwahaha- because she now will not stay in the bin)- I'd like to give her one more day to herself if I can. I should probably get a darn chicken diaper though for back up. I have 3 kennels. 3. That 'should' be enough right? But all 3 are being used lol. So Hope gets a tub. If we run into having to use up all the kennels- someone is gonna have to wear a diaper! LOL Although 2 of the kennels aren't for sickies. Just the quarantined EEs and my geese who still need a home built for them. ahhhh! Not enough hours in the day!
