Hi all, I'm up in Lake County and in search of hatching eggs. I am helping a teacher friend hatch in her classroom at Easter, by providing the eggs and taking the chicks a few days later.
I was hoping to find an interesting variety of birds (but not mixes) for the kids to see. Large fowl and bantam would be great. She has two incubators, we can hatch 17...
What would be really great is if someone who is planning to hatch around the same time would let us do the job for them and take the hatch back??? I would love to keep pullets but
I am worried about the little roos we will end up with. I have two and cannot have any more...

I will pick up, deliver, and pay....

Thanks so much!

It seems early for a Marans, but maybe.................... If so maybe her ink jets aren't in full gear yet. Lucky you my Marans took forever to lay compared to other breeds.

thanks -- i've got four other marans layers and have never seen an egg this light -- plus the one in question hatched out of a VERY dark egg. I suspect the older isbar is likely the origin of this odd egg (although i will try to keep watch to see who's laying in the coming days), will have to check with the breeder i got her from to see if there's any possibility she's not pure?

To lay a brown not mint she would have to be 2 generations off. A mix on the first gen would still lay blue with the overlay.

This however makes me crurse gosh darn sneaky roosters anyway!

Hi from Woodland!

I bet we can find some for you. I may be able to get some Olive Egg layers from the egg farmer or I could collect some my OEs from mine.

Welcome to BYC and to the best thread out there :) I'm sure someone here will have eggs for you.

that's true... seriously, I'm baffled by this one. absolutely no idea who this egg could have come from. there's one SFH in that pen, but she's been laying for a while so her eggs are larger, more creamy-colored, AND her egg from today was sitting right next to this one. the other girls in that pen are isbar/marans crosses (large olive eggs), an araucana (turquoise egg), and the youngsters.

here's a picture of the pullet egg in question (middle right), with the SFH & araucana eggs collected at the same time, and a marans egg from the other pen for comparison:

i'm totally stumped!!

An egg swap would be fun!!! I'm trying to narrow my breeds down but it is so hard! My two favorites are my BBS Langshans and my Pita Pintas. I also like my Wellies and have the chance to get a man for them. They are laying beautiful, big, terra cotta colored eggs. Love them! I also love my blue Cream Legbar/CL mix eggs. The pure CLs lay a huge egg for the size bird they are. Not a one of them is friendly though and they are very flightly so need to consider that when housing them if I decide to breed them. I have a quad of Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks and a trio of Rhode Island Reds. I like both of the breeds but if I have to scale down, they are probably the ones that will go. The other breed that I "need" is some variety of dark egg laying Marans. Meanwhile, hatching frenzy is upon me and my incubators are filled with Langshan, Pita Pinta, and Pita Pinta mix eggs. Have to get chicks listed on Craigslist before more hatch! I also have 12 Northern Bobwhite quail (3 female & 9 male) that I am going to be listing. If they don't sell, we will be eating them. I need the pen space for chicks!

Edited to add I forgot my Bresse! They are flighty, too! We need to modify their enclosure at the farm to keep them in. My friend is getting tired of seeing white birds all over everywhere!

I have decided I can quench my thirst for different breeds by collecting single pullets for the layer pen. If I have to hatch or raise a few chicks of each to achieve that I can do that. I don't mind hatching, brooding & growing out so whatever stage I am able to get them is alright with me.
Someone asked in an earlier post when the party was. The chicken lovers party is on May 18th here in Turlock at my house. My grand daughter was talking about it today. She is 12 so remembers the last one.
My son, my chicken helper, couldn't be here today. His girlfriend is in the hospital again. My grand daughter & her 4 year old brother were my chicken helpers today. We all 3 went out & fed all the 12 fodder feeders to the chickens & gathered eggs. Coy was so cute he wanted to help & wanted to go inside the pens with me carrying his block of barley grass..........Olivia not so much......LOL She was a good helper too but didn't want to enter act with the chickens. Funny thing a few years back she had her own chickens. She is showing pigs nowadays. Now I ask you Who could like a pig over a chicken???....LOL It warmed by heart working with them.
Someone need to teach me how to respond to multiple post all in one post. Kim, Chiquita, I think Ron and a few others do it all the time. I just don't know how so I end up doing a string of single posts in order to respond to more than one person...............It not like I am getting old or anything I hope.....LOL

Next to the quote button, it says Multi. Click on it and it will turn gray. Go to the next one you want to quote and click Multi again. When you get to the last one you want to quote, click on quote. All of the multis and the last one quoted will appear in your edit window.

That is kind of what I have done with my layer flock. But, I tend to collect 2 of a kind! That really makes chicken math go crazy! My flock is very eclectic but now I know which breeds I like the best!

Here's the one I helped. Umbilicus is nice and clean! -Kathy
Your baby duck is cute but your color pattern in your granite is beautiful!
here is a few pictures of the crele olive egger project I think I may have 2 and 2 but may be incorrect. they need to fluff up a bit more
Great photos!
Mine don't stay under long, they actually prefer sitting on it, lol. Muscovies are great jumpers! -Kathy
I have a few 3 week old chicks who don't go under the Eco glow. I'm tempted to pull it out and use it on my next due hatch instead of a lamp but they are so young ... Would you ?
