California - Northern

I decided I'm going to post on as many threads as I can to help build up the Egg Train this year.

The West coast is lacking in help right now and most birds and eggs that we need to move are here.

If anyone travels or will be traveling, or just wants to help with organizing or making some short deliveries, please, please, sign up on the members thread and add your traveling destinations to the monthly destination threads.

The Train have worked. I got behind after my husband died and lost some momentum, but he was behind me on this and I really want to make it as big as I can. California we can still use lots more.

My main reason for starting this was because I get the worse looking hatching eggs in the mail. I wanted to do something that would help all of us get out shipments in better shape. This year you'll all see me really trying to grow this, so you might as well give up and join in. Help your fellow BYCers out.

OK you can return to your regularly scheduled posts.

Thanks

Kim

I was advised to ask here, but it's barely related to chickens so hopefully it's alright.

My GF and I will be visiting Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park and Humboldt State University in Arcata sometime in the next month or two, but I've never been up there. We only have a day for each town so besides the college tours, what else should we see as prospective future residents? Any good places to eat?

And I guess you could tell me about the local chicken scene, too. Cross-posted this in the Bay Area thread for maximum question answeringness.

Los Bagels is awesome

! It's always my first stop when I go home. What kind of food do you like? What are you interested in? There are lots of great hiking places. There is a poultry show the second weekend of February in Eureka.

Welcome! Sonoma County is the size of New Jersey, with a very diverse offering of outdoor activities to be had: ocean or river kayaking, surfing, hiking, world-class road biking and well as mountain biking, horseback riding, abalone diving, mushrooming, fishing, chickening...you get the drift. LOTS of outdoorsy stuff, but San Francisco only and hour or so away for more upscale cultural activities. Rohnert Park, where SSU is located, is very suburban. Santa Rosa is large enough at pop 160,000 to have a reasonable variety of things to do and events to partake in. The wine industry drives a lot of what goes on up here. Personally, I take advantage!

Best,
Dawn

Isn't Nor Cal great. The sunrise this morning is epic. It is 60 degrees and perfect out, and it is January 22nd. I really revel in these 10 or so days of spring weather we seem to always get in January. The chooks and ducks are increasing their hollering, waiting to be let out into the cool predawn to get the worms. After extensive travelling the world over, I realize it does not get any better than this. ( well, maybe New Zealand, but it is so darn similar to Nor Cal.) I grew up in Ukiah (until 4 years old), and have since lived on a ranch my great grandfather bought in the 40s in the Santa Cruz mountains. I have always talked about northern seccession, but now realize Santa Cruz (AKA Malibu North), may well be in southern Cali, both geographically and culturally. May be time to go north, young man. Anyhow, just feeling particularly blessed on this fine morning. Nor Cal is a good place to be.
