That looks like a hip joint deformity--I have not had one like that but have read that they do no heal. you will likely need to cull.

Sorry!

Disclaimer: I may be full of it-- only one picture. You might want to post to the emergency section for more help.

I have had that happen when the temp is too low

I put them down.

That's what I was thinking (that I would have to "off" her.) It's pretty bad. I've tried band-aids, and ties, but it doesn't seem to help. I can't figure out where the problem is though. I was hoping I was wrong, and there was an easy fix.

. This will be the first chick I've had to do that with.

@lizanne I love the brooder full o color! Sorry about the Silkie and the little one with the the leg issue. It looks like it is on upside down??? Anyway, Last spring I treated and kept and cared for a crippled cockerel with spraddle and curled toes...both feet...and though he lived about 5 mos and seemed to be happy in his little chicken life. We spoiled him terribly. I wouldn't do it again. That's just me though and I may be full of it too. It was taxing.Shame on me for saying it but the morning I found him dead I was mostly sad but I was partly relieved. Hugs to you on whatever decision you make. hope that brooder full of Seramas makes you super happy. If they tolerated the cold better I would love to have some but I think my bantams of choice are D'Uccle and Cochin.

I am more than a little excited to add both and work on my Silkie D'Uccle project

I had to do it last weekend.

I wrapped it up in a paper towel, put him into a zip lock bag and used scissors at the neck. quickly closed the bag. It was over very quickly and the poor suffering chick was gone.

It is sad but a part of raising chickens.

Quote: Last year I did 21 birds mid summer. We got fed up with feather removal and if it was a pain I just said screw it. Trim, wash, bag, and toss in the cooler. We don't eat the skin anyhow so it does;t matter to me. But good job getting them all out!

Sooooo chicken people. Just testing the water. I would love a blue or black or splash silkie (do silkie ppl call the splash ones paint?) I think I said before that I am adding 6-7 birds in feathered/fluf form and I have always made it a practice to add by 2 so everyone has a friend. I am currently planning on adding:

2 NH and 1 SPR girl from Deb
2 splash and/or blue mutts or Langshans from PetRock
1 silkie...I only want one, but I want it to have a friend so wondering if silkie breeders can PM me or tell me here if 1) they would sell me just one, I would time it if possible to coincide with others acquired at the same time and 2) what else you may have that I may want to add so that it wouldn't be a singleton

Thanks: @Audio51 If you get another batch of MAM eggs I am still interested in your extras as well.

Definitley!. I still haven't heard back from her though. The is someone else that sells hatching eggs for the same price, but she is all the way in Missouri. I would rather get them from CA if possible. Less time enroute fro the PO to throw them around.

I PMed her to ask her to add me to her list and never heard back from her. I just took it as a sign that I needed to concentrate on my Pita Pintas and not add another breed to my flock. How many different black and white breeds can a girl have, after all?!!!

Remember how I wanted a broodie?

Well.... Somebody heard me and within a day, I had a broodie!

I also have insane MF leghorns that don't do what they are supposed to do.

I believe this one has gone broody. Or is trying to anyway. She has completed 2 whole days in this nest.

The video is of me risking my limbs to sneak in an egg and offer fresh shavings for nesting.

I do have to figure out a better spot for her but that will take a couple days of fixing.

Tommy do you have a bantam coop?

I have a micro silkie comming up. I could get it dna tested (it is so small I don't think it will lay eggs or crow) that is going To need a special home. No comb area to speak of signs say girl but special needs for sure.
