Mario said the fan is supposed to move the hot air under the healing element around. So does not take anything out. He said check the temps where the unhatched eggs are the fan could be very strong it could be overwhelming the heater. Then he said calibrate lol. Hes been trained.

Im wondering if you thermomter aas a little low since you change all temps with still air to forced air...
All of what Mario said and the fact that the fan was going the wrong way!

Sucking cold air in from the bottom would have really messed up the temps. The bottom of the eggs would have been too cold.
Chiqita: That's what I thought when I was looking into making a cooler-bator. I'll re-calibrate the thermometer and see what it says.
Would that (using the fan vs. still air) affect the thermostat in the actual incubator? All of the eggs that hatched pipped on day 20.

My #2 Orp chick died. ;( Only one left....

This is the fan placement for the hova-bator (from the inside)

And this is the top view with (with the plugs in)

I also have his testicles!

Need to figure out how to get my roommate to eat one, lol.

Put them in with some beans (as a side dish)... (They look like little beans to me. )

i would agree with this -- i've got a fancy-pants incubator (RCom) and it did terribly with shipped eggs, but the eggs from my own flock are ALL developing, except for one clear -- so i think the trouble lies with the shipping, not the incubator.

and i have to say, i LOVE how trouble-free it is -- no stressing over adding extra water or sponges or worrying about opening the lid for a moment, the temps and humidity levels readjust almost immediately. i'm quite impressed by this gizmo.

Ok...don't get mad at me...but I have an overly simplistic question. And I'm asking due to lack of education, not malice or insensitivity.

Why are the nice expensive incubators so difficult to get a good hatch from? Why are they so much better than the basic styrofoam incubator (with turner of course)? Are they only superior for hatching the breeds that are not your basic dual purpose chicken?

I'm only asking because that's what I used for hatching my BR/Moran crosses, and it went well. However, next month I will set my first batch of Jersey Giants and bantam Lavender Ameracauna's. I intend to use the basic incubator unless you all tell me otherwise. Our 4H poultry leader has offered to set them in his large top of the line incubator, but that takes away some of the magic of seeing them hatch at home (my house).
EE eggs from your own flock will hatch in your Bra!

Shipped and fragile breeds need more help than that....

@chiqita had a good answer for this, but the fancy incubators even have a cool down cycle now. The building materials and design keep the temps stable at a wider temperature range in the room too. There is also an increase in price based on the size of the incubator.

For a real shock, check out the price of a Brinsea contact incubator.

Good Lord, that's expensive!

I was accused of being Rich because I suggested that a 40 dollar high intensity ova view would help see into dark eggs.

Imagine if I suggested they used a contact Incubator......

That contact incubator is crazy! For that price I would sit on the eggs myself, my temp tends to run high anyway.

Yes! It better hatch real well and make espresso for Me in the morning!

I doubt they are that much better.
