California - Northern

I wash because my husband is such a city boy and refuses to eat anything not washed. I've tried to explain the whole "Bloom" thing, but he says he doesn't care. His problem is it comes out of the same hole as their poop and he can't handle it. And everyone else who gets my eggs "need" them washed.
Most of my eggs are pretty clean anyways. If they're a little dirty I wash.
A few years back I called the County Ag dept to see what they recommend. He told me the state regulations were a small amount of bleach in the water . I think it was like 1 tsp/gallon, but that smells way too strong for my preference. I don't want my eggs tasting like bleach, so i use less.
So i pour a little quickly over the egg, then rinse that off all in warm water. I don't let them sit in any water.
I do have the Manna Pro egg wash, not sure which is better.
If anyone else does it different, I'd love to hear.
I sent hatching eggs to pozees in Colorado. They went by truck! and all made it fine.

She rinses the eggs in oxine prior to incubating them.

Karen, I'm behind as usual, both here and on returning emails. I enjoyed visiting with you and Julie so much! My local friends tease me whenever I try to talk about chickens. It was so pleasant to spend some time talking about things that are interesting to me!

Kim, it was so nice getting to visit with you too! It was a fun day. I really enjoyed myself and seeing your gorgeous place was a real treat. I've already been working on the hubby about the Dexters :) I really look forward chatting some more at the party. I know what you mean about your local friends, mine all think I'm chicken-obsessed. (I'm sure I am)

Thank you for the offer - unfortunately the closest we ever get the Sonoma County is Sacramento!

I feed the real gross ones to the dogs. They eat chicken poop(yuck) when they can find it so I'm sure they enjoy the extra flavor on the shell. One of my hens poops in the nest box sometimes, but it's always a watery poop, so I wonder if it happens when she's laying the egg. Those gross eggs are for the dogs...or my parents, who don't mind washing the eggs.

I cooked a Dexter Pot roast on Sunday--It was very tasty!

My Family was amazed that Grass Fed Beef was so nice and tender.

Well im happy i got my new bantam coop built just need to finish tge windows in tge morning. their coop is a huge shed that used to be used fpr wood. theres plenty of room for all of them including the replacements we are getting

So nice that some positive things are happening for you. A new coop finished, how exciting. Keep up the good work.
At $25 each that would be twice as much as I would have paid for several straight run chicks. The problem isn't space, it's money.
Is this a chick? I understand charging a little more for the BCM chicks. I do find them more difficult to hatch & in very high demand. Working on getting darker eggs takes time too so there is a big investment in raising them both in time & money but if that is a price for a chick I think it is extreme. I do charge that on POL pullets of almost any purebred though. I am very stingy with my Marans because I, even after several years, am still working towards a goal which I will never reach if I keep selling all my pullets.....LOL. It is hard to have something that so many people want & not want to give it up. I do share with friends & sell some chicks, but haven't yet this year.
25.00 a Chick ? Holy cow time for a price increase
Hopefully that is a young sexed pullet.....................

as of now there is 17
Way to go Jason....Keep up the good work..!!!!!!!!

I'm behind on reading this thread, so don't know what bottle cap waterers you are talking about, but I have several metal spout thingys that go on a bottle for cage waterers. I'll donate them to the party if you would like?
The feelings are quite mutual I assure you. I hope to get my rear in gear & send a thank you card too. All the time I have put into making chicken greeting cards I need to take advantage of & use & I don't. I never send cards, chickens or others........LOL

We would love to have you donate the water caps to the raffle.

I have tried so many different watering systems & nothing I have done so far am I happy with for the brooders. After much effort & some expense I ousted the nipples on PVC very quickly. However this system works very well for outside with birds in raised cages over dirt. The chicks made a mess on the brooder floor with them that I couldn't live with. I ordered bowl fittings from Fleming & the valves all stuck & drowned or wet & chilled to death a brooder full of chicks over night. Horrible to wake up to. Using the quart bottles with the plastic screw on trays works but is labor intensive with 4 brooders & 2 or 3 bottles to a brooder. It was a morning ritual. Blah..blah ...blah... I could go on. I guess I am a whiney Bu..... this morning...........Sorry..........

Ok I have a friend who hatched a chick of mine that is having eye issues. Its trying to walk eat and drink with closed eyes and is clumsy.any ideas besides eye oint MN ent, vitamins have not yet helped.

With finches squinting ot keeping the eyes closed is an indication of dehydration. Is it getting enough water?

Is oxine ok to use for eating eggs? I'm not really sure what that is. And , Ron, I think you could send eggs to Russia and they'd make it great! You do such an amazing job. BTW- what was it about BOSS making the eggs darker? I've heard some foods can do that. Is that the only one?

Hey if anyone is going between me and liz let me know. Im vaugly trying to get showgirls up there.
Do you mean @liz9910 ? She's in modesto. Not sure if you meant her or lizanne .
Dan works out your way. This week he's been in pittsburg though. Usually every few weeks in San Jose. I go to Dublin about once a week myself for family.
Let me know. And what ages?

That is a huge selling point for the hubby. I bought some steaks a while back and did a test. I fed him both grass fed and corn fed, but didn't tell him. He chose the grass fed meat both times.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I passed them all on.

Can't find the past posts to quote...

@PetRock your chick pictures were beautiful!

Can't remember the name of the person on her in Paradise, but this is to you ... There is going to be a Barn/ Estate aka Yard Sale on Table Mountain Road in Oroville on Saturday. I will be there, if you are into that type of thing, come by and say hello. She will have chickens for sale. I might bring some, too. She wants me to bring pigs, but that might be too much trouble.
You were talking about getting an Orp? to Lake County? Maybe I could help with transport. I will be there on Sat. and will go back, that evening. I go Hwy 20 and turn on 16. I'm going to the Red Bluff show, so that's another option.

That was probably me. (Vicki) Oroville is pretty close so I might go. Do you have an address?

The Orps need to go to Cheryl (Chic CAN) in Lake County. I am picking them up in Red Bluff the weekend of the show so meeting there would be perfect! That would be wonderful if you could transport them from there to Lake County! Then she wouldn't have to wait as long to get them, since I am not going to Sac until 4/10.
