Mine are buzzing around the chicken run at about head level. If they are this bad now they will be intolerable by summer if I don't do something now..

I noticed that yesterday and today too! Guess it is time to go back to putting DE in their feed. Really helps by drying the dropping enough that they don't attract the flies as much.

Almost no flies here yet--Our big problem is in late august when the tomato harvest starts....

Our worst time was October. That's when there's a buildup from the whole summer. It starts getting humid, but not cold to kill them off.
Better with no horses around.
When my daughter did Pigs for 4-H, that was the most horrendous time. You had to bury the manure or the poop pile would start to move

Then those suckers made life miserable to be outside. The flies just HAD to land on you…all of the time.

Pigs are cute, but THE worst for flies.

Been there, done that, with pigs and flies. It was a neighbor raising the pig and we where so over-run with flies I can't imagine having them on our property!

In all fairness to the pigs, they (the neighbors), are really bad at taking care of anything. 3 of their animals have come to our house to die!

Debi, I checked with Heather on those cabinet incubators. She already has deposits on 2 but has 5 more available for $550 each & they come with the water bucket setup on the top. GQF or is it QGF......LOL. They only have a few months use when they are finished with them & ready to sell them.

Yes it would if I had a whole crew to work it.....LOL I don't even keep one OLD house cleaned.......LOL

I grew up on 40 acres! There was an irrigation slough, Creek, Prune Orchard and lots of different trees!....
....It was a lot of work but a great place to grow up. I think 5 to 10 acres. would be great.

We have 6 here with about 4 of it in permanent pasture. What's left to work with is more than enough.

I often break out laughing during the fair, most of the boys rehearsing are the 5/6 month old boys. They brighten my days, but glad they aren't all coming home with me!

I hear you. My 4 year old grandson Coy likes to go with me to the chickens but boy can he get them going. It is deafening in there. I am trying to teach him to move slow & use a soft voice..............yeah, right........LOL

From what it said on the website, these are bigger, tougher pads that can be used for larger animals like dogs. They are pretty pricey and they recommend that you buy a thermostat to go with the pad. That puts the price for the one I was looking at up to around $200.

Way more than I am willing to pay per brooder times 4.......... I will say that I don't know if the small eco glows are going to do it for me though.

My black solider flies have not started breeding yet so my flies are terrible too!

Oh my.........My grand daughter Olivia is raising a 4H pig out in the pasture behind the chickens carport.......here comes summer Yuck.....

My new Brinsea octagon 20 Ex arrived today. My husband says I need more power outlet bars....LOL Now what do we try to hatch next.???? Dyann gave me some mottled Japanese eggs at the poultry show Sunday & I put them in the R Com King Suro today. My husband fixed it for me. Dyann has the same one & said she had exactly the same problem I had last time I tried to use it when it kept shutting down & I lost the whole batch. She said that model had a problem where the power cord goes into the unit. That was what it was so my husband fixed that & re booted it. He is great about finding needed info on line. Thank you Raymond such a good helper is he......

Amonia build up can cause problems.

Also, mold can too. Are they wheezing? what are their symptoms?

Muscovies eat them too??

Muscovies like fast insects. So There is less then last year. But They Don't go out of the way to eat them.

Black solider flies are a local insect that eats poo and deters house flies and feeds chickens. It is a big deal in the sustainable protien movement (mostly thats in Europe. But your kids may eat them) Its high in protien and fat . Chicken crack AND the leftovers from the bin are superior to worm juice.

The only downside is making the bins is either expensive or a pita.

our neighbors got horses, refused to feed them. they'd run out of hay for 2-3 days and the horses were chewing on trees(what's left of them anyways). Then re-peat: get hay, run out wait a few days. We even had left over hay from last winter and gave it to them for free. The guy didn't even introduce himself when he came to get it. Just "Ya, where's the hay at?" And that was it.
animal control could care less.
Then they started getting out because they were hungry. The horses were in the road (busy) AND frontage road to the freeway. Animal control said "well if I cant' catch them, I just go on to the next call"….WHAT??? they're in the road! Third time in about a month. Well a few calls later, and NOW the county is making them feed and contain their animals. I'm not one to complain, and I usually mind my own business. But animals shouldn't be starved. My OTHER neighbor put it perfect: "Why should I (him) have to stare every day at these poor horses starving?"
And if they are endangering other people…especially OFTEN, its time to get serious. I won't let my 17 year old daughter hit a horse in the road at dark.
Sorry to vent on bad neighbors. But the point was - I can relate!
