That's OK...I one of my favorite smells in the world is horse poop.

LOL, horse poop does have a "nice" smell:) We just got a horse and my kids saw her poop yesterday at the stables. They are a little bit grossed out by seeing so much poop. Of course, smelly chicken poop doesn't bother them that much.

So, I now own a Silky. I think she's large fowl, smooth feathered, and maybe a black tailed buff. Well, at least her name is Silky:) This is about as close as I will come to owning an actual silky ( no offense to those who own silkies, LOL).

Nice Horse! I miss mine....

We have a TON of wild birds here. There were probably 15 of them on just the pool cover this morning, hopping around and eating who knows what. If the lifecycle of worms in hens is the same as the worms in dogs, then it would be 3 weeks until the worms were adults if I remember right. Meaning it would fit very well into the timeline with us just having moved to a new town.

I just called my feed store and they said they have Strike 3 dewormer for chickens, which is a pellet. Will this work? It's a bit pricey, but it looks like it would be really easy to use since it can just be fed like normal feed. Would a 1lb bag be enough for a flock of 6?

If I were to use the horse paste(if they have it at my feed store) is it easy to administer? I would rather pay the extra money than try to shove stuff into the hens mouths...

Be aware that Strike III is meant to be mixed in with the regular feed.....not fed straight. I bought a bag a while back but have not used it yet. I wormed with Wazine in late fall before my pullets started laying. That way I only had to withhold a few eggs laif by my older girls. Strike III does not require withholding eggs, but does say to stop 3 days before slaughter.

Our biggest slugs here inland are about 2 inches but I've seen them about 6 inches on the coast, usually crawling across the large picture windows at the Smith River house. Some of my birds run screaming from them, I also have ones that get right in the way when I'm working so they won't miss any I expose. I've noticed they have individual preferences in proteins, some won't eat worms but will tear apart the black millipedes with gusto. Sow or pill bugs is another one that some will eat but others won't touch. I recently lost my spittle bug hunter, she learned they the white too usually had a tasty morsel hiding inside and would hunt them out.

I think it is chickens.......Oh man...I hope not though! I only have 1/4 acre and already have too many!!!!!

I only have 0.15 acre--I think it's probably for the best that I have a zoning-mandated maximum of "only" 11 birds

I think mine is only 5...but all the ones from the same clutch only count as one....right???

Thanks, Karen - I don't know if you remember, but we met a few years ago at a class that Walt taught in Santa Rosa. It was a lot of fun!

Lol! Yeah, 175 is a fun road - but not if you're in a hurry! Thanks for the kind thoughts.
I don't have any BBS. I do have some black and barred LF cochins - one rooster is nice enough, I think I'll enter him in the Sonoma County fair this year. Ya never know, somebody else might think he's nice too.
I'm still puttering along with my Araucanas, but I'm a long way from show quality there. I only have one that has decent shape, and only one with tufts. Unfortunately, they're not the same chicken.
And my Buckeyes were brought to a screeching halt by a fox. The fox pelt is now on the wall, but she took out all of them except for one lonely Buckeye rooster. I'll get some more eggs & start over. I really like the Buckeyes!

um - so no call ducks for people with a heart condition?
I can see the autopsy report now. Cause of death: quacking ducks.

Hi Pat..........Walt's class was great wasn't it? I am not as good with names as I am with faces. If I ever see you again I will remember you & probably remember where I met you. Nice to have you back.
What cuties! I have a few smaller chicks that hatched from pullet eggs. They seem to be doing fine and will probably catch up with their hatchmates eventually. One has earned the name Scrappy! I am more discriminating now with which eggs I set to hatch. I was just so excited to test Zorro's fertility that I set almost every egg. None of the smaller eggs have had a problem hatching and the chicks are strong, just smaller than the other ones.

I think I read recently probably on this post that the larger egg have trouble hatching sometimes because the chicks grow so large they can turn around properly to hatch. Of course my thinking sometimes gets me in trouble.
For those that asked what I will be selling: 1pr Brown Chinese geese, White Runner ducks, pairs and trio's of LF New Hampshires,..no single females. One Wheaten Ko Shamo bantam pair (very rare and will be APA recognized in April), White Leghorn Bantams and possibly a pair of East Indie ducks.

I'm not placing an ad for a week or so and I hardly ever sell birds. PM me if you have any interest before the ad goes out.

Walt
I would love to have a trio Walt if they are still available. Sounds like another road trip ahead. Just last week or so we were off to Kim's for a Delaware rooster & what a pretty boy he is. Pretty pathetic that someone else's culls are a prize to me.....LOL Hey Jules are you ready for another road trip??????

I have the same experience with my birds I will put special treats in each pen & some will devour it & others let it sit practically untouched. No accounting for taste I guess.

Oooooooooh East Indie ducks.

Thanks everyone. Turns out the feed store did have Wazine, the guy I talked to when I called just must not have seen it. I got the smallest bottle since I only have a small flock.
The directions are a bit confusing. It says for Chickens: Over 6 weeks of age: for each 100 birds, use 2 fluid ounces(60ml) of Wazine-17 in 2 U.S. gallons(7.6liters) of drinking water.

But first off I don't have a 2 gallon waterer, I have a 1-gallon one. So could I split the dose in half and dose for two days in a row, or keep the dose the same and put it in my 1 gallon waterer? Also, I don't have 100 birds, I have 6. So do I need to take down the dose since it says 60ml for 100 birds?

You can split the dose in half.

You need to repeat in 10 to 14 days.
