California - Northern

Hello all you No. CA people.  Just a quickie (can't read the posts from the last almost five months).

I fly home on Sunday, hopefully I'll have time to at least wander out to see my birds when I get home.  I'm hoping DH didn't have too much trouble in my absence.  If you can believe it, he was missing all the hatching while I was gone and set some eggs with emailed instructions from me.  He actually hatched out nine chicks in one of the styrobators all by himself.

I look forward to catching up with everyone.

Glad to hear your on your way back. You have been missed!

Why do chickens like to randomly be really noisy? Mine never make noise when laying an egg, but every few days at seemingly completely random times, one or two of them will start going, "bock bock bock bock BOCK!" over and over and it's REALLY loud. Does anyone know why they do this?

They do that when they lay and egg, when another hen lays an egg, when they are scared and sometimes I think just to irritate you.

I have one, for no reason, that will go off about 9 at night.

Very silly chickens.

My chickens must be weird because I've never heard the egg song from them. I did see Bertha being noisy when she wanted to go into the nest box but someone else was in it. Besides that, it seems to be completely random, sometimes they'll even just stand there and do it while they're free ranging. One of them did do it when a deer came up to the fence lol. She scared it away! Big, scary chicken, y'know.

Was it this song?

Mine usually do it while still in the nest box or walking away, but they definitely sing!

one or two being noisy is usually an egg "song" (either before or after laying, and not exactly musical!) -- but if they're all freaking out, then something likely has scared them. i can always tell when our residential bobcat or coyote has jogged across the meadow, as all three pens of birds are screaming like there's no tomorrow -- even though the predators haven't tried to get into the coops or anything. that's their alarm call -- and it actually has a very different cadence than the egg-laying announcement.

After sitting on my hands all day, I finally checked under my broody hen - and all the fuzzy butts are out!
Yay!
5 nice healthy plump chocolate orp peepers.
AND - 1 pipping in the incubator (finally), a lemon cuckoo orp.
Double Yay!

I'll try to post a few pictures from my travels. In NZ I got to visit a gannet colony, absolutely fell in love with pukeko (they consider them a pest, I'd bring home a breeding pair in a heartbeat) and was amazed by the black swans. Think about going to a public park and being mobbed by geese for bread, now replace those geese with black swans! I stood in one spot by a public lake and counted 200+ of them. All I could think about is how much they cost to buy a pair in the States, yikes!

Oh heck, here's a couple now.

Oh, and here's a Red-Legged Partridge I took in the back garden of where I've been living in the UK.

In case you can't tell, I did mostly bird photography while I was gone!

Deb!! Awesome photos! I must have missed where you went and all of that, but have definitely missed you here! That's so cute about your hubby missing hatching! Our little Hershey we got from you is all grown up and laying beautiful eggs! She barely has any copper on her neck, but that doesn't bother me a bit. She's so cute with her little leg warmers, LOL.
