I am a murderer. I had 5 duck eggs that are hatching now. Last night I put them in the oven to keep warm so i could clean the bator since the chick had already hatched. While putting them back I listened to each one. all 5 were pecking and peeping. I was on the last 2 eggs to put away when one slipped and broke. :( I wrapped it in a wet paper towel.and put it back in. The Duckling was moving and talking. Would have hatched tonight or tomorrow as the others are piping now As I feared it died this morning.
So sorry................certainly something I could have done. I have dropped eggs while just gathering hatching eggs & feel bad.

Before I post them on CL, would any one be interested in Delaware pullets?
They are 6 weeks old. Two have greenish legs & the rest have bright yellow legs.
They are hatchery birds (Cackle) but they are fat & healthy so far.
Two are really tame & always come up to me looking for goodies.
Not sure what to ask for them, $10? PM me if interested. Thanks!

Don't feel bad...I'm sure any one of us could have done something similar.

Just think about the others you helped to live that are pipping now. They could have been someone's breakfast....

Well, I'm feeling pretty crappy. At lockdown 8 of the 9 d'Anver eggs were moving. When I went in to check on the chick that was bleeding I re-candled. No movement in any of them, 1 more phoenix has pipped and there is 1 partridge left. I didn't see anything moving in the other 2 phoenix eggs either. Looks like at best 4 of 30 hatching.

Maybe they are saving thier energy.....dont give up on them yet!!!

   I need to list chicks on CL but I keep putting it off.  DH doesn't mind if I hatch chicks as long as some are going out the door to new homes.

I was looking at Manna Pro Poultry conditioner.  Anyone ever used it?  Cheryl used to give her birds Dr. Cheeke's YQ+ from King Feed.  I would like to listen to that lecture, too.  Shang and his girls don't seem to have a problem with fertility but there is some kind of problem.

I use the manna sometimes.throw some out with scratch.
Got really good fertility. 37 out of 42 were good. Out of 37, 31 made it. 6 were fully formed Marans that just didn't pip

So sorry to hear that. It is quite a let down to have awesome eggs to turn out.

My wife and kids were asking similar questions. What does the mother hen do for chicks since we raise them from day old without a mother? I guess they were wondering if they were like other seed/song birds that "feed" their young.

Broodies are nice to take care of babies, protect them, keep them warm. They will find food for them and show it to them. Nice to have them do the work :)
