5 of 9 eggs hatched under the first-time broody!

I think I hear pecking in 2 more but Mama decided it was time to get up so I put them in the 'bator with the duck eggs and turned off the turner. One was clear and one just seems to have disappeared (or else I miss counted). Also moved the meat birds out of the garage. They will spend the days in an outside pen and will sleep in the shed. They are getting HUGE!!!!

Zooom! Zoooom!
Speaking of it how are the silkie/showgirl eggs doing?
I was only able to candle a few in each nest after the first week - grumpy, bitey broodies.
Everything I looked at was developing.
I didn't want to bug them anymore so I haven't looked again.
Saturday will be Day 21. I will keep you posted. I am really looking forward to see what hatches. :)

Thank you! I'll do some more reading on specifics.

Am thinking of letting the chicks grow up in the new coop; then bringing my older girls in (when the little one are big enough) so the littles are on "home turf". Or will that make a difference? Are chickens "territorital"? Or is it just more of a higherarchy regardless of the location?

Sometimes I think I over-analize things...:caf

The ONLY breeds I have been able to add babies to in the enclosed run are barnveilders and olandsk dwarf. Everyone else I let spend the day in the main yard with PLENTY of space, then bring the babies in for the night . When they don't care about seeing each other in the yard anymore and run in and out of the run together sharing the feeder and water- THATS when we do a trial overnighter. I've had eaten babies and even pullets when rushing things with certain breeds:-(

@chiqita - or anyone. We are considering passing along our smoothe and frizzle serama. We have no hens for them and they're feisty over it I think. If no one here is interested we may take them to the sparks 4h sale in a few months...
