Congrats
I have lots to learn about chickens yet but the variety Ive seen so far just deepens my interest. Agreed on the rubber chicken thing.

Dang it--had a chance to research this this morning, and so I'll be getting finisher or flock raiser when I go out. The ONE TIME I buy layer pellets Tom comes home with a 15 week old... At least I have plenty of oyster shell to offer on the side--when our neighbors moved, they dropped most of a 50 pound bag of it on my side of the fence--easier than taking it, I guessOh, and I just learned that the smaller pullet is a young'n--Tom says it was estimated that she'd be laying in about a month (in which case, I think it's one of the ones Urbanviewfarms said hatched at Christmas). Is it O for her to have layer feed? I usually have all flock, just 'cause, but I bought layer feed yesterday.
What does the hygrometer say?Of course I could never just hatch something without a question!
I was doing great with humidity but now that the chicks are hatching, condensation is building on the windows.
??? Don't want to open it and cause shrink-wrapped babies.
Is it okay to leave it like that?
Quote: I had this problem. I literally had to blot wet bubbles from the hatching chick's nose and mouth. My hygrometer stayed the same. Don's advice is great; that's exactly what I did.
that is too funny! it was really posted someplace?
Thank you - after the last experience with shrink-wrapped chicks I was afraid to open it. I will remove a dish. The humidity was at about %65 but (after 4 hatched) spiked to %80 - according to the hygro. What does the hygrometer say?
The problem with too much humidity is that the chicks will suffocate from not enough oxygen. If there are any plugs in the incubator pull them and make sure the air is fresh in the room with the incubator.
I will not hurt them to lift the lid and allow for some air exchange--long enough to pull sponges or extra water sources.
Congrats on the hatching!
