California - Northern

The Ko Shamo bantam has two unusual features that have never been allowed in any other APA bird. This is one of the reasons the Ko has taken 7 years of work to be admitted to the APA SOP.
Standard Weights

Cock……………34 oz Hen ……………….28 oz
Cockerel………..28 oz Pullet ……………..22 oz

Two unusual features of this breed are: COMB: Chrysanthemum, firm, set close to the head. Cockerels present a pea-like shaped comb, maturing to a chrysanthemum.
WINGS: Short, compact, prominent at the shoulders, and tucked in at stern. Both wings are split between primary and secondary feathers. Shoulders are powerful and fairly wide.

The comb changes from a pea comb in a young bird to a Chrysanthemum comb at about 9 months old.

I took out a water container and another hatched so we are only down 2%. This is looking like a much better hatch this time!

This is the borrowed incubator from @sewandgrow - Thank you Karen! Looks like the chicks are going to hatch just fine - if I can keep from messing it up. This bator had 24 Turkey eggs that didn't develop. Leaves me with only 15 in this hatch. All but 2 have pipped so far and the ones zipping are doing so before the membrane turns brown. This makes me quite happy!
The humidity should stay stable now. Each chick will add some but not too much. It will go back down as they fluff up.

I had 3 Partridge Penedesencas and 1 UofA blue out this morning with 8 pips. the rest of the PPs and Crele Penes should be out tonight. They rest of the UofA blues will take another day usually.

Walt was kind enough to let me hold a pullet at the Stockton show, and she was incredibly strong and felt like a tank. Very heavy for the size. Nothing at all rubbery about her!

Congratulations on their acceptance, and thank you for letting me have a first hand experience; I know how busy you were!

Always so helpful! Thank you!

I would try to move the one that's been sitting the longest. Sometimes multiple hens are okay, but I've had hens squish or peck peck to death chicks. Can you put one hen and the eggs in a box and bring put them someplace else?

Sorry, I mis-read, but still, I would try to separate them.

Thank you Kathy

I can do that tonight. They are on Day 16 would you just take the eggs, lay them in the new broody box and then put her in on top? I can close up the box and put food and water in it should I do that for the duration and let her out to poo when I get home>

Those UofA blues, did you ever post photos? I'm so busy I know that I miss things. Loved the eggs and super interested in what chicks and adults look like!

Congratulations! I hope it all continues to go well. What are you hatching?

Ok Im working on this coop design and its looking like a near 4'x4'x4' cube sitting on top of 3 feet of fenced in shelter with feed, water sand and dust bath. This will face the existing 5'x2' coop and a 6'x'12' enclosed run will extend away from both coops forming sort of a "T".

The idea will be to use the Small Costco Coop which I can lock off from the rest as a way to isolate/or introduce birds from/to the flock. It should be plenty of space. I will make the run large enough to walk into.
The only bad thing about this is the run takes up some prime growing space for my garden.

Any comments are welcome.

It sounds like a good plan!

The chickens will pay for the lost garden space in fertilizer too.

I usually move the hen and eggs into my bathroom at night and by morning they *usually* figure out that's where they need to be, but some will get frantic and try to get back to their original spot. The good ones just hop out of the box and poop on my floor, eat, drink and return to their box. If you use your bathroom, remember to keep the toilet seat down.
