Not to long ago I remember a discussion on cockerels getting shoulder feathers first and pullets developing tails sooner. These little phoenix have tails 3/4+ and are getting shoulder feathers, they are 10 days old now. Anything to keep me guessing.

I am thoroughly confused, but will get it down eventually. Cute babies!!

And speaking of your "danged dark eggs"

, out of the 4 pures I put in lockdown I have 2 huge chicks out already walking in the tube plus 1 zipped and 1 pipped! The layer pen eggs are also starting to pip along with some of my Bantam Sumatras. I'm going to have a restless night

Tomorrow is official hatch day for them as well as the D'uccles for @Coopcommander / @CackleJoy !
Yipee...!!!!! For some reason I am having better luck with the pure BCMs hatching, which is delightful. I hope you get a really good hatch. You know some of the layer pen eggs will be pure BCM because I have a couple BCM hens in there being covered by Big Boy & one of his sons. How you will know who's who I know not......LOL
I bet Nolan is excited too................

Thank you.
Boy, from that quote you took from me, I realized i am SOOO long winded!

I was curious about that myself. I have a BCMs chick out that had long wing feather right away. I will have to study them more.

I have more hatching today and I have a Splash that is three weeks old. The Juveniles and adults are in Winters growing out at Jeramey's egg farm.

I will get pictures of this hatch when I can.

I have those lovely dark brown layer eggs separated from the green & olive eggs too so I could mark the chicks according to their egg colors. The Ams are in their own little basket too. Those seed tubes are fantastic for doing that in the Genesis. I will probably pull the one with the 4 Marans babies in the morning as this is hopefully going to be a huge hatch. :fl

most say 25 to 50% but you never know. It is worth trying.
I really wish i would've candled all the eggs at the start & found this one. I would've fired up the incubator for just the one. I've never had one before. Figured i was safe with fresh unshipped eggs. Next time i know better.

Well here is the good news...on Day 16 my bantam embryos look to be doing great.

The bad news is that after dark I put the eggs in a lovely private broody box and put Petunia in with them. She FLIPPED OUT.

grabbed to the hardware cloth of the box with her toes and stiffened her legs as I tried to put her in and once I got her in there she just stood by the eggs and did not cover them again. I gave her about 20 min and no change. When I opened up the box...she could see b/c I had a flashlight...she bolted and made like a crazed thing for the pen exit. I got her and calmed her and popped her back on her original nest and slid her eggs back under her and she settled down nice as you please.

Chiqita has talked about broody hens being attached to the nest so far that has been totally true for the only two I have ever tried to move to a broody area. They both were possessed! So I guess I will just keep an eye out on friday and Sat. I"ll have a brooder ready for the babies if there is trouble.

And...as if that isn't enough broody drama..remember the dorking in my pic? Well she is now co-brooding Petunia's eggs. I moved her off and she went back twice. I actually hope she is serious. I have been saving Del eggs in case someone else decides to brood.

Remember how I fixed up my one coop to encourage broodies? None of my broodies live in that coop.
