Last night I was whining about the Golden Laced Wyandottes that just don't hatch out. Well last night they hatched. Even the unpipped ones! The last one is zipping. Unless something happens this will be our first 100% hatch! I'm so tickled

Of course I don't count the 2 doz Turkey eggs I set - because YOU JUST CAN'T HATCH an INFERTILE EGG! They were from the neighbors - I sure wish they would have been fertile, it would have been fun to hatch a few turkeys.

It just amazes me the things people think about store bought vs fresh eggs... I know that the fresher they are the harder to peel, but had not heard about vinegar thing helping before. How much do you add?

I could definitley go for Deviled Eggs at least once a week!

LOL!!!! I did not thing it was long-winded. I tend to write long stories too, but sometimes you need all that detail to get the point across! (Maybe that is why some of posts don't get responses though....

Well here is the good news...on Day 16 my bantam embryos look to be doing great.

The bad news is that after dark I put the eggs in a lovely private broody box and put Petunia in with them. She FLIPPED OUT.

grabbed to the hardware cloth of the box with her toes and stiffened her legs as I tried to put her in and once I got her in there she just stood by the eggs and did not cover them again. I gave her about 20 min and no change. When I opened up the box...she could see b/c I had a flashlight...she bolted and made like a crazed thing for the pen exit. I got her and calmed her and popped her back on her original nest and slid her eggs back under her and she settled down nice as you please.

Chiqita has talked about broody hens being attached to the nest so far that has been totally true for the only two I have ever tried to move to a broody area. They both were possessed! So I guess I will just keep an eye out on friday and Sat. I"ll have a brooder ready for the babies if there is trouble.

And...as if that isn't enough broody drama..remember the dorking in my pic? Well she is now co-brooding Petunia's eggs. I moved her off and she went back twice. I actually hope she is serious. I have been saving Del eggs in case someone else decides to brood.

Remember how I fixed up my one coop to encourage broodies? None of my broodies live in that coop.

Most of mine will move pretty easily as long as the eggs are there, but with some I have put something in the box they have chosen to sort of "line" the nest (like a box with a hole cut for an entrance). At first they use it because it is in the same spot, but then they get used to the box being around them after a few days and think if that as "their nest". Then I just move the whole box to the new location

The blood red moon lunar eclipse is supposed to start at 10:58 tonight and be total at 12:06 AM. Mars is also the closest to earth that it will be for 26 months. DH told me that it will be close to the moon and should look orange. It is times like this that I wish that I had a telescope!
I went to bed at the usual 9 PM, but wolk up at 11:45 for some reason. Figured I was meant to see it, so I got up and watched it until 12:15. It was pretty cool to watch, but not nearly as impressive as one I saw in Kingman AZ in the early 80's. MY DH and I were hauling a load of furniture and and driving thru the night. That one looked HUGE at totality and like you could reach up and touch it. I will never forget that one!

Thank you again for bringing her too me. I think its resperatory illness or she has something stuck. You may want to check your other birds. I am giving her a treatment just in case. She doesn't do it all the time and I found little about it on BYC. She is doing well so far though. She loved the grass and herbs lol.
I checked mine after we go home and none of them was doing it. I will keep an eye on them. With the lady I got them from saying the other one "appeared to heve been stepped on" I am now wondering if the was a different problem with it that she didn't know or didn't reveal. What kind of of respiratory problem do you think it might be? What are you treating it with? I'm wondering if I should start mine on something as a preventative. They are meat birds and have not been around the rest of the flock. They have about another 3-4 weeks until they are butchering age though and I want them to continue to gain as they should.

It was so funny! I had the first egg ever hatch out of my Brinsea Octagon 40. I move them to a Genesis 1588 for hatching, but missed one of the UofA Blues!

I was checking on the other chicks hatching in the Genesis and heard chirping coming from the wrong place!

I looked over at the tilted brinsea and there was a chick there! leaning against the lid. I had my oldest dd hold the brinsea a bit towards level and lifted the lid--the little thing flopped out onto the table.

The chick is in the brooder under the eco glow with one side removed so the it can easily touch the heater if it wants to keep warm.

For those keeping track of humidity, the brinsea is set at 35% and the chick was not stuck at all.

The UofA Blues are very healthy chicks!
Wow! Good save!. Can you imagine if it had hatched in one with a standard auto turner? It may well have been crushed...

Last year I had a couple of ducks hatch on the turner in the Genesis. They were fined though. There is enough room for them to get out of the way but they could be crushed.

We put baking soda in the last batch of fresh eggs we hard boiled. They peeled perfectly! I told my adult daughters who were helping me to put in 1 Tbls and they added around 3 Tbls just to be sure! It worked!

I'll have to do a test and try vinegar in one pan and baking soda in another pan.

We thought that it was very cool!  We were in our PJs, sitting in the backyard, eating chocolate, and playing on our phone/kindle while we waited.  It was a great time for my 12 yr old to ask questions about God and His awesome creation!  :)   We watched it from the beginning until it was completely covered.  I would have liked to watch the whole thing but it was past midnight by that time and we were tired.  I took a few pics with my camera but the moon just looked like a small bright light in a black background. I'm going to look at pics on the NASA site today.

It was so neat! AND we pooped out about midnight :-( it's been a draining week... BUT it was an excellent reminder that as bad as cabin fever gets out here by the end of winter ( even crummy ones) - it's SOOOO not God forsaken territory! The sky was phenomenal !

Used a new white wash recipe on coops. Lime, salt, borax, water. And a new spray for birds- garlic juice, peppermint, eucalyptus. And lemongrass . I have heard conflicting ideas on peppermint ( respiratory issues ) but that was all in oil bases not water application and the coop has good ventilation AND I apply in the morning to allow them to air out .

Anyone ever see adverse reactions to peppermint?

It is supposed to have an adverse reaction on spiders! I keep meaning to get some to spray around the ceiling. Monet does not like spiders!

Quote: I think the Genesis has a little more room on one side. They even have it set up so that edge is in front and you can add water to the troughs there. I keep meaning to ask you...the little disposa;be containers you use for humidity...do you know how many oz they hold? The smallest I can find is 4 oz and they seem big...
Quote: I will give that a try...might dod the comparaison too.....

Quote: Does it really make you nauseated...or you just don't like it? I remember when my kids were little and they were colicky the Dr recommended putting a peppermint LifeSaver in a bottle of water for them to drink.

I will check tonight. The Beef Steak tomato containers came from the Grocer Outlet. I can get 4 of them in the Geneses and hatch the fifth group outside of the containers.
