Barred Plymouth Rocks from the feed store are fairly nice. I had three of them and sent two of them off to live with a couple in Davis that lost 3 to a raccoon. They were still laying. The third one passed last fall at 3 years old.

They are smaller than breeder stock but lay longer than productions reds with less issues. Mine were kind of bossy though.
Aren't they one of the originating breeds for Delaware's though I think it was Rock Roo's and NH hens right?

I'm may pick up 2 of the Barred and 2 more BO. (Such sweet dispositions on those) if I can get my brooder box built out they shouldn't be too old by the time these show up next week
Ameraucana Pullets
Rhode Island Red Pullets
Silver Laced Wyandotte Pullets

I think that might do it. (Raising these for family members) Till the Delawares come back :)

Yes, but they were not the ones from the Hatcheries. Personalities have been changed by the breeds the hatcheries sneak in to get more eggs out of them.

Yeah I've noticed differences between my 4 Delawares color patterns and one of them has a spot on the beak and the legs are more orange than the others. (this is also the half blind one) Can tell that the blind thing makes her more cautious than the others. I think they are 7 weeks today. Feed store says they get them at day old they arrived on a Wed. So that should make Tuesday the hatch day right?

They are a day old when they are shipped--Hatch day is either the same day or the next day and then there is shipping time. They are usually 2 to 3 days old when they get to the feed store.

So here are 2 of the initial views of the coop design (the red box is the existing small coop) There are some design fixes that need to be applied as the existing coop is against a masonry wall and so will the new coop be on the same side. making the large access door on the front inaccessible unless you move the existing coop. The ramp may very well block the existing coop run door so may locate the door in the floor .

I checked mine after we go home and none of them was doing it. I will keep an eye on them. With the lady I got them from saying the other one "appeared to heve been stepped on" I am now wondering if the was a different problem with it that she didn't know or didn't reveal. What kind of of respiratory problem do you think it might be? What are you treating it with? I'm wondering if I should start mine on something as a preventative. They are meat birds and have not been around the rest of the flock. They have about another 3-4 weeks until they are butchering age though and I want them to continue to gain as they should.

Wow! Good save!. Can you imagine if it had hatched in one with a standard auto turner? It may well have been crushed...
I have had chicks hatch out in the turner. It worries Mario when its quail, but mostly they just get under the thing and run around peeping. I have only had an issue once and we were away for 24 hrs, so they had time to get stuck. Mostly i worry more about them sneaking in the water and drowning! THAT I have had happen, especially quail who are insanely talented at that.

We did a massive spring cleaning and re organizing of the coops Sunday! everything got washed, debugged, oxined and moved around. Hauling 6 foot shelves around was very tiring! I was sore as heck Monday. I am trying to cover the roosting shelves better this time so they are easier to clean and don't get flies breeding. The chickens are still wary of the whole thing, and not excited yet about the new nesting boxes.

I'm thinking of putting in about 20 gold balls to make them look enticing...

Have you seen SPR? I got this pic online. But in additon to strikingly beautiful they are rumored to be sweet, productive and potentially broody. In addition SPR are far more unique and less popular. For me that is an additional draw. I hope to get a couple from Deb in the fall since I have wanted them for about s year and a half now.
