The kids are a big part of it.  I enjoy working with them (most of them anyways, LOL)  and the majority of the parents are great people.

I always said a good leader is one that likes to see all the kids succeed, not just their own.  I think sometimes the best leaders are the ones that stick with it after their own kids have "aged out".  I've always wanted to see my son get back into the animals.  Everyone thought he would end up a licensed rabbit judge.
Mariah has 1 more year and I will stay on if we don't have anyone else who wants to do " barn duty". She's happy only showing other animals in Master Showmanship, she thought she wanted to do sheep until I reminded her they where a 1way trip.

Good question! Hopefully, someone with more experience with broodies will have an answer for you.

I had one broody pullet then a week later two more joined her and then another week later two more joined them with a couple more thinking about it! All of a sudden, I am broody rich!!! I sold one broody sumatra mix to KristyAnn which put me down to 4 committed broodies. One of them is a young Wellie who doesn't always get back on her eggs. She gets off her nest for her constitutional and then ends up in a different box sitting on newly laid eggs. I thought about giving her some newly hatched eggs but my one secure pen that works really well for mamas and babies is occupied.

Thanks for replying! It is funny how they roll through it isn't it? I never had more than 1 at a time until now so I am sort of at a loss. hoping @lawatt will chime in because I remember last spring she was I think juggling the needs of 5 different broody girls.

I am not going to do anything until after this weekend. I figure Jamie Lee can be my back up incubator in case one or both mamas gets up too soon. The one black sex link I hatched in October was a precocious little thing. Now I have 8 of them kicking around in their eggs so poor Norma may have to abandon ship to keep the hatchlings from killing themselves.

Norma is in lock down mode. I have only witnessed her leaving her nest twice in three weeks so I am pretty sure she is there for the duration. Petunia was still on her own eggs. Jamie Lee still hanging on the golf balls.

that they all behave appropriately.

I am thinking of planning a clandestine culling. Last Summer I separated two 2.5 yo bachelor hatchery NH roos that technically belong to my uncle. My uncle lives right behind me and we share a driveway. These boys had spent their lives together and were lonely. I asked him if I could bring one up to my place and get girls for the other. I started taking over their care and then separated them and gave them both ladies. The one I moved into my pens is a love. He a super breed ambassador as far as attitude goes and just a great all around guy... The other one is the one I told you about before who is a complete jerk! He has rushed me when I feed them and I want him in a soup pot in the worst way. Thing is he is technically not mine. And even broaching the subject of harming a feather on his head would not be acceptable...trust me. My uncle is a very loving man and his devotion to animals includes accepting and even being secretly proud of a mean rooster. He got a straight run of 6 birds 3 years ago. One was a pullet the other 5 boys have lived out their days at his place. I like the concept too but he is as hospitable to the mean ones as he is to the sweet ones:

So I can't just up and do it.

I mean I can but I would have some splainin to do and I like to keep the peace. but I also like to keep my skin intact so I really want to cull the bad boy.

Here is the Shenanigans Plot:

Since they look so much alike I am thinking of moving my sweet boy down the driveway to butt face's pen...moving BF to my friend John's for processing and getting a high quality juvie boy from one of the 3 NH peeps here.

I know this is ridiculous and the mature thing would be to rationally explain to the parties involved the reasoning behind it all but no matter how I couched the conversation I would be seen as both overstepping and blood thirsty.

Taking votes...should I leave it alone or proceed with the caper?

Personally, I would tell him that the rooster is mean and needs to go.

But I also understand family/neighborhood politics. If the only way you can move him out is clandestinely, go for it.

Today is warm, sunny, the mud has receded in the pens................it's chicken pen sort day. Or at least the start of it. Let me look to see how many NH boys are running around. I did just have a NH chick hatch the other day and I think there are a few more NH eggs in the incubator right now. Not to mention doing a head count of the big girls.

I was a leader for 11 years some of them after my kids had aged out. They now want me to be the Poultry leader because I have chickens. I am just not up to the physical part of it but could be an advisor. Your knowledge & willingness doesn't necessarily give out on you just because your legs do.....LOL

You could switch them out, and the day after you eat him say "something" happened to him. So now you'd like the sweet one back.

I would tell him that you are going to process and replace him because he has become unmanageable. Give him the opportunity to suggest an alternative. Safety first you know.

I have 1 UofA blue chick, 1 pip on penedesenca and 1 CL Pip !

I have 36 eggs being set for hatch for the Easter Hatch Along. A few of them are iffy but I am hopeful for the one CL egg to hatch and be a boy! I think that I should try some of the U of A chicks for blue egg layers.
