I wonder how you guys who farm do it. I would love to do it.

When I was younger & we first bought this place I was very pro active, fence building, hole digging, building whatever we needed. etc...etc...etc.... Now, 35 years later,....Not so much. It has been a lot of work but Oh soooooooooooooooo worth it. I wouldn't have missed it for anything. A great way to raise kids through 4H too.
My Chicks are hatched! My chicks are hatched!! I get to pick them up tomorrow near Modesto! YAY

Apparently two of the cream legbar pullets hatched out white? Is that the recessive white sport gene? anyone know? Since they are going to be urban hens with no rooster, they will just be pretty backyard lawn ornaments, but I did find it interesting! YAY Fuzzbutts!!
Yay is right. Where near Modesto? I am in Turlock. What all are you getting from where?

Ok I saw this on CL.. is this an old r com or is bower a different brand

Help! I think I may have gotten myself in trouble. I was doing some research for DH when I discovered that our property (1/2 acre with a single home in the county) was zoned General Commercial. We're in a weird area that is part Ag/Residential and part General Commercial. There are quite a few homes with chickens in the same neighborhood so I didn't think anything of it when we got 3 hens last spring.

Here's the problem: I'm expanding the flock and wanted to see what the max number of chickens we could have was (couldn't find anything online because our home was "grandfathered in" since it was built prior to the property being zoned commercial). So, I called the county, left my number, address and question.

I got a message back this morning that "just because an exception was made for the home doesn't mean that an exception can be made for hens". So, according to zoning code, I can't have chickens!

I currently have 6 chicks in my brooder in the garage and 2 (or 3) more coming this weekend. And, I'm planning to build a larger (6'x8') coop with extended run.

Has anyone had any experience with raising chickens "illegally"? I'm in the county, not the city, so it's not a matter of getting the ordinance changed; I'd have to change the zoning on my lot (no idea if that's possible and don't really want to because DH is loosing his job due to shutdown in a few months and we may need to operate a shop out of our home- which is allowed in a GC zone).
Is it just a fine? Or will they take the birds away?

Kinda FREAKING out!

Sorry for the long story and thanks for listening.

If there are chickens all around you, I would not worry about it. they are not likely to investigate unless you get neighbor complaints.

They are usually too busy to busy to track that stuff down unless there is an issue. That being said, don't have illegal roosters where cops hang out for lunch.

I am an "illegal chicken farmer". I would just keep doing what you are doing unless and until it becomes an issue with the county. It shouldn't be an issue unless code enforcement comes to check on you, or one of your neighbors turns you in. I would really look at all the codes and the wording. Most have some exceptions or loop holes in the law. I'm sorry. I know it's super stressful.

Genetics question: Due to hatch on Sat are 8 Silkie over MF D'Uccle. I know that none of them will be silkie but that they will all carry the gene.
In the next generation if these chicks are bred back to silkies I believe 25% will be silkied?

What do I do next if I want to ultimatel get silkied D'Uccle?
