Hi... thanks for chiming in. Seems like things have settled down for now. It helped tremendously to get Norma into her own space so that Jamie Lee could have that nest and her golf balls. She has not tried to crowd Petunia out since.was away from my computer pretty much all day yesterday! so trying to catch up here -- @tommysgirl yes last year i had a whole bunch of broodies at once, and their reactions to each other/chicks varied widely -- one extreme was my lovely SPPR who actually served as "aunt" to the little campine chicks when their broody mom (a light sussex) was a bit too ambitious in their first week re: free-ranging all over the place and never giving them a rest -- the other extreme was my basque girl who attacked another broody & her chicks, and killed at least one of the latter.
I don't see any way of predicting what their reactions will be, so am just seeing what comes again this year -- right now have two broodies, currently sitting in nest boxes next to each other & incubating eggs that will hatch at the same time -- but is i see any just-hatched chicks available at the feed store this weekend, i might try to giving a couple to the one girl who's already been sitting for 3 solid weeks now. i think having chicks of slightly different ages might help to reduce the impulse to compete/attack? it's worth trying, anyway.
My two on eggs are due to hatch on Saturday. Jamie Lee if she sticks will get Delaware eggs on Monday or after the the babies hatch...which ever happens sooner.
If I were to give her chicks they would be either be something I want from @Papa Brooder or something I don't really want from closer to home. Since I decided that I really want to hatch at least one clutch of Dels. I have decided to try JLC out with those. Harriet lays a beautiful egg and I have been saving them in case I got another broody so I am ready to go.
Good luck with your hatches. When are they due?
