I think one of my near 3 week old Buff Orps has been traumatized by the move to the garage and the introduction of the new chicks.
She was already the paranoid one when ever she was left alone in the box. She has developed a bit of a mean streak as of late. We had to separate her from the chicks but couldn't leave her alone so her more docile companion stayed with her. She apparently tries to bite now and again turning her in to quite the little drama queen. We shall see how she behaves this weekend. We may have to change the heat light for her. I was reading that the red light seems to make them more docil where as the white lite can lead to aggressiveness. I couldn't get a red light in time when we first got them so I picked up a white one and the del's who were older seemed fine with it. I hope to get the bigger brooder box finished this weekend so maybe we can give them all a good mount of space and separate them while still able to see each other. Maybe that will help and they can all get attention at the same time.

Only have 3 weeks now to get the new coop built. (4 if I push it).
Sounds like you are on the right track.

It does take time for them to integrate and work out pecking order stuff. The red light will help and the brooder plates make a big difference. Brinsea makes them and Premier1 has a brand too.

They get normal day and night with those since you do not need to leave the light on at night. They also have a nice dark place to go to if they are being picked on.

That would be lice. Mites feed at night and go back to the wood during the day. The advantage works if they are feeding on the skin. Feather mites that eat the feathers need to be sprayed or dusted with Seven and then a re treatment in 7 days. Food Grade DE will not get rid of them at this point.

Have you been having soft shelled eggs? If so, that will get better once the bugs are gone.

Hi Ron, thank you ;) no soft shelled eggs she just had poop stuck on her feathers and I was holding her upside down when I saw that so gross. How do u dust a chicken? Lol

First wear a mask!

Silkie said DE worked for feather lice so you could try that for them.

For dusting, the best method I have seen and people like was the shake and bake method. Put dust into a small garbage bag, put the chicken in up to the neck and shake. Keep it sealed enough that the dust does not get into the eyes and mouth of the chicken.

The liquid spray is one under each wing and one near but not on the vent. I would spray where you see the lice too.

The whole flock needs to be treated and the coops need to be cleaned and treated. If one has it the the others are assumed to have bugs too.

I knew a lady that had actual shrub branches in her brooder with mixed ages & the little ones would get under the lower branches where the bigger aggressive ones couldn't go.
I'm so grossed out right now one of my chickens has mites? Lice? I'm sure they all do. Ewww I have advantage for dogs and for cats will either of those work?
Too bad Liz............... I think this is why I had tubs of wood ash from the fireplace in the pens. Someone had told me to use that for their dust baths so I did it for awhile but stopped. The silly chickens were eating the ash & their poop was black & scared me. Ron may know more about this.

YAY for FuzzButts!! Total tally is 4 cream legbars (2 of them whites); 2 BLR Wyandottes; and 2 Isbars (a splash and a blue). SO Excited to have little peepers in the house again!! Big thanks to Heidi at UnionHill Ranch!

Thanx Vicki - since almost all my neighbors (same zoning) have chickens and/or roosters I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and go forward.

You're welcome...hope it works out for you!
Remember the IT chicks? Well, they're still in the office. I didn't want to bring the incubator back home over my bumpy dirt road.
And because we're computer geeks, we set up a webcam feed to stream to the local kindergarten. The kindergarteners already stopped by to see the eggs in person. There was much discussion on what was going to hatch out of the eggs. Popular choices were chicks, ducks, puppies or pizza.
My money's on the pizza. All the way.
How fun! I LOVE hatch cams.....Is there a link we could watch on?

I think I may have what is considered a 100% hatch. The new Brinea's maiden flight had 25 eggs. The 5eggs that did not hatch were clears & all the others produced chicks that are running around in the brooder now. I think I will try this again.....LOL
YEAH!!!!

Someone put these colorful egg shaped stones in all the nesting boxes, in the brooders, in the breeding pens, & on top of the egg fridge...

If only I can get one of my family members to cop to it....

Pretty cute

Maybe the Easter Bunny came early.......

Here is some Good Friday cuteness! These are pics of my first broody mama of the year and the five chicks she hatched this week. Anne (one of the 3 Bronte sisters) hatched last spring from some mixed eggs that I got from chiqita. She is a big, fluffy girl with lightly feathered legs. I'm not totally sure on her parentage besides Orlando the CL being her father. She is doing an excellent job with the babies! They all hatched from blue CL or AM eggs and Zorro is their daddy!

I love good broodies!

Yayyy i have a broody. i walled out and she is out sitting on two eggs (phoenix hen)
Congrats! Hope you get a great hatch from her!
