How do you take something away from a chicken that they arent supposed to have. One found a piece of plastic on the ground and was running around with it like it was the most coveted treat.

The don't exactly respond to "Drop it"

I have a net for times like that!

They also make a grabber for the legs. It is funny what they will eat!

Mine eat Styrofoam when anyone (someone...) leaves it in reach. They got some I'd been saving for Hubby's new massage studio. He didn't believe me when I said to NOT leave it outside. :( It didn't seem to hurt them, but grrr!

Hiyas & Welcome, @jdxx!
If you ever have extra pure Bielefelders eggs or chicks, I'd be interested. Shipping or driving from Mendo has to be kinder to hatch rates.

There's a woman here on the board that lives back east. Her house had the sheets of Styrofoam insulation under the siding. Her chickens were able to get at it and they ate ALL of the insulation out.

So much for the theory that some people have about animals instinctively knowing what's not good for them.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes, I have been lurking here for some time now and have been amazed at the amount of activity and friendliness.
Laurieks, We will definitely have Bielefelders and others available in the coming months, most of our flock is growing out still. One of the reasons we got the breeds we have is because we couldn't find much locally besides hatchery stock.
Chick pictures coming soon............................

I've been sorting chicken pens all weekend (while worming and checking over the birds individually) and this is what I know I'll have so far

Pair of Tomaru longcrowers (from Sandhill)
Two breeding groups of Icelandic (roo with three hens each)
Trio of bantam buff brahma (exhibition lines)
A breeding group of Iowa Blues (roo and five hens - these may be spoken for)
A silver penciled Plymouth Rock roo and about 8 or 9 hens (exhibition lines)
Two blue Isbar hens
A breeding group of Pekin ducks (I think there's a male and three females, I'd have to look again)

In new chicks I have one Tolbunt polish, one white polish out of the Tolbunt pen, one New Hampshire, LF Orpingtons (3 Jubilee, 1 Chocolate and 1 Black/split to Chocolate). There are also LF blue & black Cochin, but you'd probably have to pry them out of DH hands.

I still have a bunch more stuff to thin out, but I'll post them as I sort the pens in the next week or so.

If you're interested in anything so far, let me know by PM. I'm in the Placerville area, but would be willing to deliver or drive part way to meet you.

Hello everyone, We are on the coast in Mendocino Co. (Fort Bragg) I've been wanting to say hi and now seems like a good time. We have been putting together our chicken thing for about a year now (I believe I got carried away) We have Bielefelders, Cream Legbars, Silver Sussex, Isbars and one hatchery Delaware hen.
We are hatching some Bielefelder crosses today!!!!!!!!!! Actually they started hatching yesterday and through the night, three more out of nine to go. I will post up pics later!!!!!!!!!!
