California - Northern

In case you meant birchen eggs from my flock, right now i only have one girl laying, as the other is -- you guessed it -- broody.  so can't supply very many eggs until later this summer, then they're both back in action and hopefully a third pullet reaches POL.

and just want to say publicly a HUGE thank you to Deann (@juststruttin
) for teaching me to process chickens today!  with the help of a couple of her friends, we processed six giant orp boys, and one is now quietly resting in my 'fridge.  it was a huge amount of work, i certainly have more appreciation for the ease of buying a whole chicken from Whole Foods now -- and am not entirely sure i can do it all myself someday (or whether i'll entirely want to!), but i'm delighted to have had just excellent guidance and instruction.  and can't wait to try braising the bird!

It gets easier but is always a bit solom.

Laura, it sounds like you lived near my great grandmothers...later her daughter's place she lived off Mandana!

I was on Mariposa, just off of Oakland Ave, from 2000-2007. lovely place, very close to the Rose Garden.

Quote: Perhaps I'm just cold-hearted, but i didn't find it particularly *hard* -- just a lot of time and work involved! in the summer i'll have that time to spare now and then, but during the school year, not so much...

Going to be testing my carpentry (or lack there of) skills this week with the new brooder box. This working thing is really putting a crimp in my backyard plans. :) .   Too many  things to do and no time to do them in.  If I didn't spend 3-4 hours a day commuting it would probably be alright. After the brooder is done then the coop will come next. Not looking forward to the expense but will be really nice to have the space to house them all. (At least all I can have at home).
Hear you there I drive 67 miles each way 5 days a week. Would much rather be home working on improving my penedesenca and helping better get them and the Empordanesa out there more in the public eye

Our house overlooked the Berkeley Rose Garden! Access was from Glen Avenue.

good to know! at least i know i've earned THIS particular chicken dinner... (although won't cook him for a few days -- can't wait to see what he tastes like, i've never had home-raised chicken before!)

Also lived in Kenwood for 12 years until the kids were grown. During that time my sister lived on Sonoma mountain. Probably near where you are.

I admire those that can process and eat their extra roosters. I am a softy and just can't bring myself to do it.

well this was my first time, and so i did not do the actual killing -- Deann's friend did -- but i did hold the plastic bag to catch all the drips, and fully partook in all other plucking and cleaning activities. will have to try it again another time to see if i can actually do the dispatching.

I'm sooooooooo far behind, but just saw this video (sorry if you guys and gals have already seen it).
