California - Northern

what timing -- i have two MORE broodies as of today, and three already busy trying to hatch eggs -- but they aren't doing a terribly good job (esp. compared to last year!), perhaps because they all keep swapping nests. there are two who i *think* have eggs that should be hatching today/tomorrow, but so far no sign of action... this is a long way of saying, i may be in need of just-hatched chicks soon, too.

*sigh* -- it's always something, isn't it!
You all are wanting chicks, not eggs - right? I have CLB eggs but no chicks yet. The eggs are fertile. My incubator is just full.

yes, looking for chicks -- the girls are not doing well at hatching their own eggs, and it didn't occur to me to set some extra in the incubator just in case this exact situation arose... i'll know better next time!

two of them have just gone broody, and two are nearing the end of their three-week sit, but one failed to hatch the first time, and has continued to sit for another three weeks -- she seems to be in good health still, but i wouldn't want her to keep sitting for ANOTHER three weeks after this -- so if the eggs under her now don't hatch in the next day or two (cross fingers!), i'm going to look for some baby chicks. Lynda kindly sent me the link of the person she's been talking with, and that seems like a potential source for now...

thanks!

I may know the people - after all - how many do YOU know have Lav Orps, Light Sussex & CLB? They are lovely people!

I am going to Karens party and I want CL and @PetRock says she may help me hatch eggs.
Hatching eggs comes on like an illness with no cure - consider yourself warned

It is so fun and miraculous to have eggs turn into fluffy chicks!

I'll have no problem bringing you eggs!

I agree, you have been warned! I bought a Brinsea 20 Advanced, and then 5 week later I bought the eco model because incubating 28 eggs was not enough, LOL. :)

What a delightful story Rebecca. Chickens aren't the smartest animals on the farm sometimes.....LOL
How do you ferment your feed? I have been watching You Tube a lot lately and came across that. Does it cut down the waste? My chickens waste sooooooooo much. I have been day dreaming of making a restrictor ring for my big hanging feeders. I switched to pellets some time back trying to cut down waste from the crumbles I was feeding before.

My Bob White Quail eggs are finally hatching. I had 39 initially and 26 went into lockdown. When I went to bed last night at 9 there were about 8 I could shat I thought looked like pips...2 of those looked like they might be starting to zip. (The eggs are soooo little it is hard to be sure what you are looking at). I couldn't sleep so I got back up about 9:30 and, of course, checked them again. No progress. Sat and watched TV for a couple of hours until I was feeling good and sleepy. At about 11:30 I went back to take another peek before heading back to bed. 8 of those little buggers has already popped out of the shells and were scattered all over the incubator! OF course as soon as I got up this morning I came out to check. I saw 15 empty shells but only 3 babies. I immediately opened the incubator to figure out where they went. I lifted up the quail egg carton they were hatching in and the rest were all crowded underneath it. There is another egg zipped and 7 more in there. Now...to figure out what the heck I am going to do with them!!!
