I have been keeping mine on a rubber mat on the dining room floor for the last 6-8 months with no problems. Suddenly both of my dogs have discovered it. I am trying a brick on top, but may have to move the bicke up higher if that doesn't work ....![]()
Bakersfield is the demarcation for me.
My problem is that the rubbermaid is starting to buckle in the center making the lid not fit correctly. I'm going to have to use buckets and I don't like that at all. The scoops don't work well in buckets. Maybe a big flower pot with the drainage plugged... I'm thinking about solutions. I use the food grade buckets from my grocery store bakery. They were free and each holds about 2 1/2 gallons. I use the double bucket method and fill my strainer in the house. I keep it pretty dry. I stir in the scoby each morning so have to use the wooden spoon anyway. I just use that to put the amount I feed I need into the strainer and then carry the spoon out and use it to put the FF in the trough. Of course I only have one pen with 9 hens and 4 pullets. You probably have way more than that so my metod might not work for you.
Good news on the integration!Well my little buffs have managed to get along with the slightly older buffs now after all being put into the new large brooder box. For a while the little ones would just avoid the bigger ones but yesterday they were all hanging out together and the little ones were splitting up more.
Now that they are about 3 weeks old they are nearly the size the other 2 were when we brought them home.
I really need to finish the new coop now so I can move the big buffs outside they will be 6 weeks this week and itching to get out of the box.
That way I can bring home some more delawares (Im almost certain now that I have 2 and 2 from the first batch) Ill post pics tonight. Anyone know if you can tell sex with Buff Orps at 6 weeks? Dels grow so fast.
