Thank you, I'll look into it!
The best one Ive seen is the soda bottles in bike water bottle holders. Just have to remember to cover the air hole on the bottle when refilling or pipe in the new water through it.

One of the brooder pics a page or so back uses them

they are marsupials, like kangaroos and so forth, & their babies live in the mama's pouch until they're bigger -- absolutely no relationship to rats.

they have a LOT of small sharp-looking teeth, so they can often *look* fierce, but they mostly aren't -- if threatened they might hiss or growl, or possibly "play possum" (i.e. pretend to be dead in the hopes that the threat will go away), but they are not attack animals. they are usually described as scavengers and/or "opportunistic omnivores," i.e. they'll eat whatever they find, but they are not *predators* in the classic sense. I don't doubt that they'd eat a chicken if it was easy to get a hold of, but generally they shouldn't be a big problem, esp. if your chickens are in a safe coop at night (opossums are mostly nocturnal).
they carry a disease that horses get.
Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis in horses. ... protozoal myeloencephalitis · other ... Opossums carry the organism that causes this disease..

Quote: Definitley planning on that!

@Audio51 I have a piece of lamanate on the bottom, not stuck to anything. I pick the whole thing up and dump the bedding. But I use a lot of bedding that they can scratch at, so i don't change it a lot ( only if its used for q ) I use dirt and sand sort of a deep litter method. I do grab hard pieces on top once a week or so but that is easy to do, i'm not sifting the whole thing. When I do clean it i use activated oxine and spray the whole thing. Sometimes I soak the sand but mostly I just dump it since its got dirt, pine pellets, etc too.

Mind you, the chicks that go in that brooder are 2+ weeks old, the babies are in my office in a aquarium.
Good idea on making it removable. That would definitley make it easier.

With a little modification, wouldn't this make a cute little coop?

That would be adorable!

one of my students just brought in two fully feathered canary finch chicks. (that's what I always cal them but IDK if that is their real name) Anyway they are under a light in my classroom...don't ask... and I have sent her to make them a little warm sugar water. Anything else we can do with the limited resources at school?

OR 4-H mom I had to google pyncheon chickens...like MF D'Uccle but with crests instead of feathered legs. they are darling. I heart crests!

They will need hand feeding formula if they are still begging. Petsmart or Petco should carry it. If they are fully feathered they should not need extra heat. You should contact a wildlife rehab though

Here is f2 my first seoerated at hatch project chick! I used it to figure out who the other one who sneak hatched was !

@chiqita The quail eggs arrived in great condition! The foam seems to have worked very weill with them They are so pretty I almost hate to have them ruined by hatching! Thank you so much! I alo have a buer for the Bob Whites. A lady in Orland wants them for her preschool class. They hatched chicks and ducks, but didn;t have any quail eggs. She will take them home to live after the kids get to enjoy watching them for a week or so.
