Looks like 5 pyncheon are developing. I did pull 2 that were scrambled but left her with 11, since I couldn't be sure, pop door was still open and made it harder to see.

Auto correct is driving me nuts! I'm not hatching "luncheon" eggs.

The one I just built is 30" but one of my 4 wk CLB is already flying to the top but any deeper and I couldn't reach the bottom.

I put hinged lids on my box and a removable floor to empty the cob litter. Im going to try the shavings litter in it this time around Im hoping I can get them to push through the wire.

Yeah even 28" is a little deep but I can reach. Its 27" wide and 6' long Ill be adding a number of places for slide in dividers soon. The plywood I used I already had or I would have used lesser quality plywood (Nice 3/4" oak sheets left over from the entertainment center build) I'm seriously considering adding feeders and water that can be filled from outside and possibly improving the design for an outside box as well.

Where did you get the hatching eggs? They seem to be very rare.

Post pictures Please.

I ordered them from PA through eBay. The seller says leg color is white or yellow so I will have to see about getting some willow legs to add. Here I go talking about chicks that haven't hatched yet, positive thinking.

I was looking for them a couple of years ago. So many kids up here want the D'uccles, but it is so hard to keep feather legged birds looking nice I thought the Pyncheons would be a good comprise. I might be completely wrong but I like them and they can stay here.

DD got her phoenix and none of my partridge rocks bantams made it so I ordered the Pyncheon. I have such will power, not!

5 is good news, but I hope you get more. I have to candle the Serama eggs and see if any are growing. Never done it before, so I'm relying on all the great info I've read on this thread.

Mmmm.... Luncheon eggs. Make mine deviled please.

(At least auto correct got the pronunciation right!)

I got 3 chicks yesterday and as a brand new chick mama, I am so VERY THANKFUL for BYC and especially this forum. I have learned so much! The reference resource of searching the forums came in very handy yesterday for both settling in the new babies and my nerves when one of the chicks kept panting. I raised their heat source and left them be, and when I checked on them this morning, they were eating, drinking, pooping, and no more panting!

In the spirit of gratitude, here are some cute chick photos

and the BEST thread on it! Congrats on your new chicks! They are so cute!

one of my students just brought in two fully feathered canary finch chicks. (that's what I always cal them but IDK if that is their real name) Anyway they are under a light in my classroom...don't ask... and I have sent her to make them a little warm sugar water. Anything else we can do with the limited resources at school?
es

OR 4-H mom I had to google pyncheon chickens...like MF D'Uccle but with crests instead of feathered legs. they are darling. I heart crests!

Quote: I will be keeping a variety over time. Mostly LF chicks, but also ducklings, quail, guinea keets. I will most likely put a divider in so I can have 2 sections. Probably not for 6 weeks at a time though...at most should be 3 weeks. I will have a lid on it so flyers should not be a problem

Quote: I don't expect to have a ton of hatching.....probably about what I have been doing. But do want to have meat birds growing out periodically.. I tend to use the storage bins when they are really little and have the short stock tank soo....but that is not secure from predators. This will have hinged lids

Quote: How is that height for cleaning? I was thinking between 30" and 36" but don't want to hurt my back cleaning it.

Quote: That is one AWESOME brooder!

, but it also looks waaay expensive. I could not justify that right now since I don't know how long I will keep this up. There were some grat ideas in there though. I really like the water bottles....and the wheels...

Do you have a top on it? Reaching the bottom easily is a big concern for me
Quote: Do you know how deep your box is? It is what inspired me to look for a box. I want to hinge the corners so I can fold it away during the off-season for storage.

Ok my box is shorter then 4 feet. Comes to my Waist (but is on feet. 3 feet walls? Or 2.75?
I don't know what the heck was shipped in this one. It has asian writing on it and the outside is laminated. A bit greasy looking inside, but I will be covering the floor with linoleum. It is wrapped with 5 steel bands and has steel supports at each corner so I am hoping this is all that is holding it together. Then I can flip the panels upside down and around so the smooth edges are down and the laminate is insise for easy wipedown,

Awww......very cute!

Quote: I'm planning to do dividers too. I think it will be much more versitile that way. This plywoods on this is about an inch thick so this thing will be heavy!

@Audio51 I have a piece of lamanate on the bottom, not stuck to anything. I pick the whole thing up and dump the bedding. But I use a lot of bedding that they can scratch at, so i don't change it a lot ( only if its used for q ) I use dirt and sand sort of a deep litter method. I do grab hard pieces on top once a week or so but that is easy to do, i'm not sifting the whole thing. When I do clean it i use activated oxine and spray the whole thing. Sometimes I soak the sand but mostly I just dump it since its got dirt, pine pellets, etc too.

Mind you, the chicks that go in that brooder are 2+ weeks old, the babies are in my office in a aquarium.
