California - Northern

I am incubating eggs for the first time. I haven't attempted this before because all the conflicting info on this site and others just makes my head spin! I have a need to do things correctly and when information is not black & white, it stresses me out. I bought a used Genesis last year and never had the nerve to try it.

I bought an RCom, for 2 reasons. 1. - because my hatching room is in a barn and does not have climate control. 2. - because it looked to be the most automatic incubator. So I wouldn't have to adjust things on it.

The machine just sat in the box for over a week, then my husband (who knows absolutely nothing about hatching) took it out, set it on automatic, put a bunch of (unwashed) hatching eggs inside and turned it on. He said broody hens don't agonize over details to hatch their eggs. That was late afternoon, April 22.

Temp has been 99.5, humidity has been 45-46%. IDK how often it's been turning. I've seen it turn a few times. I candled on day 6. No development in half the eggs, from 2 hens. Normal looking development in the other half, from 2 other hens.

I'm not sure when to adjust humidity and turn off the turner. Today is day 18. Most hatching info says to adjust humidity for the last 3 days. The RCom instructions say to change humidity and turn off the turner on the end of day 19 - which would be the last 2 days. ???

The RCom users manual actually says both day 19 and the last 3 days, even though it also says 21 days to hatch.

Here's their video. Hatching section is on minute 7.
It also recommends hatching humidity to be 65% which is different from what Ron said.

For those eggs, day 18 or 19 would be fine. The Dels and Dorks start pipping on day 20 and all of them hatch by day 21 usually. 65 to 75% is good.

@caychris We have 2 rabbit cages that we make use of all the time.

One I used for the broody but it rotates as a sick pen (easy to sanitize) or for chicks on the lawn - it is super old and has a hole in bottom so it makes a great chicken tractor. The chicks also drink really well from a rabbit waterer. Couldn't be easier. I use this for 3 - 4 wkrs when I'm letting them outside to play.

This is the stationary one we got off of CL for $40. My husband then put a run off of it for the grow out pen. I can house 20 6-wkers pretty comfortably in this. Right now I have 12 and some are 8 wks old. The roost is cramped but there is plenty of room in the run.

Happy for you Kim. I love my R Com. I have chicks due tomorrow & it's only the 2nd hatch from it. The humidity was reading high & I kept forgetting to ask my husband to change it so we will see. My husband set mine up too. I just add whatever eggs I want when the time comes.

I'm in, I have eggs hatching for Jason this weekend. So far two OE, a crele penedesenca and an empordenesa. There are around five more pipped, today is hatch day for them.
Good for you Deb................like you NEED more chicks & more breeds right??? We just can't deny ourselves the pleasure. LOL

Yay!!!!

Thanks that makes me feel even better about trying it!

Good Luck ...we had a Mother's Day HAL and didn't even know it. I feel like there should be a prize for that.
WHAT???? A Hatch-A-Long and I didn't hatch along? WOW!

Take careful note.

There is nothing hatching for at least 5 days at our house. We will have gone a record 9 days with no newly hatched chicks.

I didn't even plan all the staggered hatches. That was in large part to a broody thief.

I feel like I'm announcing a new pot farm to a bunch of Coloradans. (Is that an appropriate comparison?)

Perhaps this one is better.

I feel like I'm announcing the arrival of a new trailer park in Tornado Alley.

Monday will mark the arrival of our new (drumroll) completely refurbished wooden cabinet incubator.

It is from Lanae Cash in Willits. She is driving it to Santa Rosa to a cousin of mine who is coming to Modesto on Monday.

So excited. This was a carefully planned for purchase and I was delighted that one so nicely refurbished came up for sale. I'm selling a bunch of chickens to pay for it.

Very nice! Those Crele Pens are tempting! VERY TEMPTING! Since I can't spell pened... or empordene... I am going to start calling them whatever abbreviation fits the moment. Sort of like EOB.

Good for you Rebecca. I don't think I will ever use the 600 goose egg one I have but my husband is determined to play with it someday...........LOL
NOOOO

that's FOR Jason, not FROM Jason. He had run out of incubator space and we live close by each other.

It's the best of both worlds, when the hatch is complete I just hand off the chicks. I got to watch them develop, hatch and see/feel their new fuzzy sweetness, then no brooders to clean and heat!
LOL.......... Talk about a perfect world??? I know me though & I would have to find a way to keep some of them.....LOL
