I have a Chick!!! It is solid yellow so either a Del or a sex link cockerel. It is a perfect little fuzzy thing that looks like it stepped out of a pre schooler's picture book. There is at least one more pip but mam gets nervous when I do anything other than look so I don't know about anything else. Leaving everyone alone till bed time then hoping for a nest full of babies in the morning. If not there are those silkies at the feed store...It's not their fault they are feed store birds they still deserve a good life with me right??

Unless I get more than 4 girls I am keeping everyone from this hatch either as a layer or as dinner. As usual

My guess is that this is a boy.... and one of the red stars. Vigorous early hatcher. ..I set the eggs about 1 pm on the 20th so I guess the technical day 21 is tomorrow. Anyway my money is on this being a hybrid baby
@capayvalleychick is the breeder of and
@ronott1 hatched both the broody and the bio mom. They may have hatched the bio dad too depends on what the paternity test reveals

Kim is still in shock that I had one of her Dorkings go broody in the spring. She says they normally wait until the hottest days of summer.

Choc Rock has been on the nest since about 1:00 pm has been puffed up and buc buc bucking for a week...may be hatching another set of home grown chicks but she is a TOTAL tease and always caves at snack time. Thinking that my Amelia mixed with her resident NH roo will produce a red cuckoo boy and a solid red girl so those eggs will be in the next first timer hatch for sure...so will some silkie eggs. Both girls are laying now

oh and in a moment of weakness I told a Kindergarten teacher that I would take any chicks left over from her classroom hatch..there may have been a Margarita involved.

Sorry again for the self involved post will now go back and catch up on the day and comment on ALL of you excitement

Cute little chickie! Hope you get the full nest :). I wish my feed store had silkies! I'd like a few as pets/broodies, but don't want to do a full bantam order's worth.

It didn't work...did it??

Just wait...you will have an incubator or two soon....

The first time i discovered a nest of pinkies, i set them down on top of a short bucket meaning to save them for my nephew who had a snake. I turn my back on them to continue cleaning and not 30 seconds later, all the girls were running aroung making "i have a goodie!" noises. I look to see what they are playing tug-of-war with, and ...uh... eww (at first) then cool! I can't stand wild rodents and these egg-makers will happily eat them?!? I thought the earwig, tick, & tomato hornworm decimation was the best but that topped it. Yay!
They didn't know what to make of them at first but I sprinkled scratch on top of the writhing little mass and bingo, The Dels were the best the ALs would hang back though and snatch them out of the Dels beaks. When we were kids our Grandma would give us a quarter for every horn worm we picked off of her tomato plants. Then there was the bonus of getting to feed them to the chickens

Ay yi yi! Tell him a scary story like "I'm sorry, my husband just got out of prison. He was away for a loooong time. So this weekend won't work. I'll call you on any other hatches, we'll be keeping these"
I know I wouldn't call you anymore, lol

This morning there are two chicks. Go out and offer mama water but that will be my only peaking. How long do you all let broodies go with their eggs after the first hatches. This is technically day 21.

Sick birds will often have a heavy load of mites and lice just because they are sick, so keep looking for other thing that can cause crop stasis, I doubt it's due to external parasites.

Should I massage the crop?

I wouldn't unless I tubed water first. Can you get a large syringe, like 30 ml or larger and aquarium air line? If so, I can teach you how to tube very quickly and I can assure you that it's much safer than dripping water into her mouth.
