So, after two weeks of confining a new hen for quarantine, I let her out onto the yard with the rest of the flock. She's on the bottom of the pecking order of course. So much they've attacked her till her eye and comb had bled and her feathers have been pulled out from her neck, so I have decided to take those mean girls and put them in the run until the new hen has made friends with the nice hens that are free roaming. Do you guys think I'll have to do this for long or there's a better way to get her to fit in?

So those of you that incubate, how do you make sure you are able to find homes for all the chicks you hatch? What's your back-up plan if you can't sell them?
I hatch, keep those that are suitable for breeding and sell the cull pullets as layers. If I need a male, then I keep the best one. The rest become dinner.

I'm excited, after doing some more research I think I have finally decided that I'm going to get an incubator. The great thing is that if I don't like it or don't use it, I can always resell it. The one I want(the Genesis 1588 with automatic turner) is $200 including shipping, and I have $165 to my name right now...so unfortunately I need to wait until my camera lens sells!

My reserve is set at $275 but last time I put it up (long story as to why it didn't end up being sent to the buyer) the winning bid was over $300, so I have high hopes. Either way I'm very excited to get an incubator, I think incubating chicks will be a really fun experience. I'm probably going to start with just some cheap Craigslist eggs. Wish I could get it right now! Just don't have the money yet.
that is a great one to start with as it hatches pretty good and is easy to use. if you don't like it yes you can sell it but the next step up would be a pricy incubator. I have one and I have a R-com max 20 . I like my R-com best but like my Genesis too. it does a good job with my non shipped Penedesenca and does fine with non shipped Penedesenca. I even trusted it with Brown Red Ameraucana shipped eggs

Scale training starts early!

post them on craigslist or one of the Facebook pages like 530 poultry or flock talk. I have no problem with chicks.
