So...I've got 3 weeks to figure out what I want to set for my first hatch. I would LOVE to get some eggs from one (or more) of you wonderful people but I can't decide.

1: Super small and cute - keep some; sell some: would probably end up building a 2nd coop/run for banties
or
2: LF dual purpose - keep or sell pullets; eat the boys
or
3: mix it up and go nuts

Limited to 1 brooder / 24 eggs. Either way they need to be compatible with a mixed pen and a 2 1/2 year old.

Current flock is 2 Buff Orps, 1 Barred Rock (adults in their own pen) and (brooder) 2 CLB pullets, 2 light Sussex(90% sure girls), 1 LF Cochin (90% sure girl), 4 BCM (soon to be 2- keeping 1 boy and the girl), and 2 Bantam Cochins (sex undetermined).

So...What would ya'll suggest for (or be will to sell to) a complete beginner?

Also, need recommendations for a good hygrometer and digital thermometer for the Octagon 20 Eco? Was going to get the Brinsea Spot-Check but their wet-wick hygrometer doesn't work with the Eco. Is there a good combo?

I seriously don't even want to go on our family vacation to Hawaii in July. Because of my medical problems I honestly think I would have more fun staying at home & hatching chicks. :p Is that bad? LOL.
Congrats on getting a bator!
That's a bummer! I'm really looking forward to the trip, it'll be my daughters first camping trip at the ocean.

I think the buff orps are really sweet we have 6 in the brooder now 2 going outside very soon (finish the coop finish the coop) and 4 fosters.
The delawares are great birds for dual purpose. I love mine and they havent even laid an egg yet. (12 weeks)

You have most of the breeds Ive been interested in. Though those Pita Pintas @PetRock has look very interesting

Though I really think the SLWyndote is really pretty as well as those Pencil Rocks. Depends on what you want eggs looks, meat. Man I really need a farm.

That sounds fun!! I guess I'm just a homebody. I'd rather be at home hatching chicks than being in Hawaii...I guess I'm crazy. :)

Pita Pintas are definitely on the list of wants! Seems like that darned chicken math is catching up again!

It's funny, if I'm not at work or running errands, you usually can't get me away from home...unless it's a trip to the ocean; then I can't get out the door fast enough.
