Big excitement in the coop this week. The first little clutch of Seramas hatched! :jumpy 5 hatched of 7 eggs set, shared between 2 hens. An odd thing happened though. I accidentally removed one egg thinking it belonged to a Silkie. The egg sat on my counter overnight in temps that got down to 58º. The next morning my son noticed the egg was marked #2 Serama egg, so I though I'd put it back and see what happened. Surprisingly, 3 days later, it hatched! It was the biggest egg too, which is why I mistook it for the Silkie's egg. :hide I think it might be the larger of the yellow chicks. Would being chilled make a chick a bit "sticky"? Another nest should hatch Saturday and a third nest next week. This is our first time hatching. Sure it won't be the last. Think we are in BIG trouble here! :D
Your Serama babies are so cute we should do an egg swap one day lol. I could use some new blood in my flock ;)

Just got my Octagon Eco 20 w/ auto-turn cradle yesterday. I couldn't decide between the two; went with the Brinsea because I found a discount code that made it the same price as the HovaBator and I'm *hoping* that the 20 will keep my sickness under control. Set it up this morning; hit temp (according to the included thermometer) in about 15 mins. But I'm going nuts because I can't set anything until I get back from our trip to the coast the 1st week in June! ARGGGG!

Where on the coast? I'm guessing too far south for me... Be fun to show my girls to an actual chicken person, though

Yes, yes, you are

I'm the same way with my photography...I usually am at home but if I know there's a good spot for pictures, or I get in the picture mood, I grab my camera and I'm gone.

Hawaii=good spot for photography, surely?

Chick schedules? Oo, I'll have to see if either Parkway or Del Norte Feed have such things... Heck, maybe I should check out Del-Cur Supply, too--Brookings isn't far at all.

I will definitely share progress! Rest assured this thread will be spammed with pictures and questions of my journey in hatching. :)
I got the new Genesis 1588 with auto turner. I haven't even set eggs yet & I'm really happy with it!

That's what I have and started with - it works a charm!

So...I've got 3 weeks to figure out what I want to set for my first hatch. I would LOVE to get some eggs from one (or more) of you wonderful people but I can't decide.

1: Super small and cute - keep some; sell some: would probably end up building a 2nd coop/run for banties
or
2: LF dual purpose - keep or sell pullets; eat the boys
or
3: mix it up and go nuts

Limited to 1 brooder / 24 eggs. Either way they need to be compatible with a mixed pen and a 2 1/2 year old.

Current flock is 2 Buff Orps, 1 Barred Rock (adults in their own pen) and (brooder) 2 CLB pullets, 2 light Sussex(90% sure girls), 1 LF Cochin (90% sure girl), 4 BCM (soon to be 2- keeping 1 boy and the girl), and 2 Bantam Cochins (sex undetermined).

So...What would ya'll suggest for (or be will to sell to) a complete beginner?

Also, need recommendations for a good hygrometer and digital thermometer for the Octagon 20 Eco? Was going to get the Brinsea Spot-Check but their wet-wick hygrometer doesn't work with the Eco. Is there a good combo?
I vote 3 so you don't have an misconceptions. That's what will happen anyway

My best hatcher's are the EE's. There is probably someone closer to you that has some. They hatch well and have very little sickness as chicks. They do WAY better than the little Wyandottes, Rocks, or Swedish Flower Hens. The other eggs that hatched like popcorn and made very healthy babies were EO Basque. The EE are just easier to find, cheaper and really fun! A blue/green tint egg layer is always fun in the hen house!

Yep, it's a Japanese Black Tail. Thanks for that information, that's very good to know. So I know if they die a little before or after hatch it is probably not something I did wrong. Hopefully that won't happen, though!

I was given Mottled Japanese eggs from a sweet breeder friend & candled them at 10 days & 2 were clear s I tossed them. Out od the 10 remaining I got 4 chicks 2 boys & 2 girls. The others on further inspection had quit in shell at various stages but the ones that hatched were just fine & she came to the party Sunday & brought me 3 more little girls to grow up with them. I do so hope my grand son takes to them.
I hope they hatch for you!

Bielefleders are nice looking and I am interested in seeing if they make good Meat quickly.

I am excited about the Crele & everyone knows I like big birds......LOL
with the crele I can usually tell now. the males will either have a huge expanded head spot and look grey but sometimes just the shoulders are grey. so either of those two seem to be 100% boy girls are always just nut brown.

Jason do you think the Crele sexing will work for me if my Bielefelders hatch?

we have 4 partridge penedesenca . ( 2 boys and 2 girls I am pretty sure )
brown red ameraucana
2 splits ( look splash but Jerry said they where Brown Red breed to something for splits )
also a few crele just hatched and another brown red ameraucana
Brown Reds are the dark chicks and the rarest of the true Ameraucana
What were the color of the Brown Red AMs eggs? My darkest blue seem to have come from the Blue Wheatens I had.

I just set another batch of 40ish eggs (someone please make me stop, I'm supposed to be cutting back on birds).

Anyway, it's my first test hatch on my Tomaru Longcrowers and my Bantam Black Plymouth Rocks. So I'm kind of excited about them both.

Of course, I had to fill out the tray with more LF Cochin, Tolbunts and LF Orpingtons. I drew the line when DH wanted to include some more Icelandics.
Me too. I just finished filling a Hovabator Genesis with Pita Pintas, Heritage Delawares, BCMs & OEs, & B/B/S Orpingtons. I double deck a couple & will toss a few after candleing later. Most of these will be sold or given away but I want a few more OEs & am always looking for dark BCM layers...........LOL

Yea! So glad their still going! **Mental Note: Do Not toss eggs until waaaaaaaay late**
Amisa, The Brinsea is so reliable get it all set up & ready with eggs & take it to a near by chicken lovin" friend & have them babysit it til you get home. There is really nothing to do for them except be there to check the power as long as you have the humidity module reservoir filled with water it is sooooooooooo atomatic.

& yes I learned my lesson the hard way Do NOT toss eggs til waaaaaaaaaaaaaay late.!!!!!

similar to the silver a smaller lighter blue egg.
I am not sure on the Bielefedelder crosses. pure ones are autosexing arent they? they look crele so if you cross the to silver am's maybe after a few crosses. with my cros the head spots hard to see on males on the first cross

How is the egg color? Wonder what color the splashes will be? Did Jerry say?
its ok light blue. pretty but not like yours. eggs are smaller. I think they are splits but left him a message. He had them in another run awhile back so they could be just splashes. color is pretty though unlike any splash I have had
