I asked if he would stop a Pea Hen. Weight 18 pounds and they are up for shipping hatching eggs now.
I have real trouble believing that is an 18 pound chicken, other than the old fisherman's trick of thrusting the fish out to the camera to make it appear bigger.

I'm not saying it might not take on peafowl, but a huge dual purpose breed is only around 10 pounds and that bird has a game type body. Compare the size of the guy's hand to his head.

And for the most part, your chickens will not care in the least if peafowl jump in and out of your pens. I've had it happen

I suspect he is a type of Game--should be perfect for stopping Pea Hens.

there's something strange about that photo, i believe the bird's size is exaggerated by using a wide-angle lens -- either that, or the man's hands are the same size as his own head. still might be a big bird, but that's a classic trick to make something look enormous -- hold it away from your body & use a wide lens that will make whatever's the the foreground seem much larger (there are pictures roaming the internet of "giant" rattlesnakes that are taken this way). the fact that he & the background are in sharp focus but the rooster is not definitely suggests some lens trickery.

edit: Deb beat me to it.

You are probably correct. The guy looks a bit odd too.

Great minds think alike!

I read this and had an epiphany! Ypu need a pair (ONLY) OF GUINEA! Oops caps.

They will kick said peas a $$. RIse them on your property so they don't freak out about normal things.

It's only been incubating about three days or so. I was testing out the new light I got to see if it could penetrate the dark OE shell, it did and that is what I saw. Don't see anything like that in the other eggs.

The embryos are still very fragile at such an early stage.  If you jostle them, you can damage the forming blood vessels.  I have candled eggs at 3 days before, but only if I was able to lift the lid and hold the light to the top of the egg without even touching it.

You're much better waiting until the eggs are 7 days along.

Good luck with them.  Believe me, I understand how difficult the wait can be.

Thank you for letting me know! I won't touch them again until 7 days.

Hatch fever has bitten my girls also, I guess they aren't immune either. LF partridge rock, OEGB, and ORP bantam are all screaming at me!

This is the first time I've had chicks in with the 6 year olds, wonder if they are safe. They have never shown at interest in brooding.
