California - Northern

I mean, I have my dog yard but they will start roosting in the trees or on the fence & my foster puppy has decided that it's fun to chase the chickens so that won't work. No spare dog crates right now since I have two foster dogs...no spare bathroom, I live in my parents guest house so there's only one bathroom. I have no idea what else could work. I think my only option is to set their eggs, too.

I don't know if you have the time, but you could try and see when your Tolbunt (or the others) goes into the box to lay. Mine go in one at a time over the day and come back out singing their egg song. Its pretty obvious that they just laid. Even if you only catch her a couple of days it'll save some incubator space.
I wonder if that would work....it wouldn't just come off when they pooped?(rainbow chicken poop!)

Well lots of progress but not nearly enough should be done this week

Looking Good!

I HATE those things.   They have no redeeeming qualities I am aware of.  They don;t even have a nice song!

I have my quial eggs on locksown too....they are eue anywhere from today thru Wednesday.  They are the Coturnix @Chiquita
sent me so very hard to tell what is going on in there.

The excess water will not hurt them.  This time a year it will help keep them hydrated.  I learned early on that you really can't drain the water off with the second bucket.  The mix is too homogenous.  It would be like trying to strain peanutbutter.   I allow the outer bucket to collect enought of the liquid to keep a good scoby going and ensure I have plenty to innoculate the next batch.  I also used it to start the new batch I have for my chicks.  (no BOSS or scratch grains in it).  Over time you will figure out how you like it.  I make mine much thicker/drier....like thick peanut butter or cookie dough.  When the inner bucket is empty,  I add a little water to bring the scoby up above the holes, slosh it a bit, add my feed, then add water to about 1/2 to 1" above the feed and stir.   Then I let it sit and ferment.   The meat chicks just inhale the stuff and I have to refill their feeder 3-4 times a day.  The older girls eat quite a bit in the morning before I let them out to forage, but leave a lot too.  They come back thruout the day and pick at it.  By lights out in the evening it is all gone.

Mine too....

Awww...so sorry they didn't make it.  You are probably right about the stonger ones, but it's still hard when they don't make it.

That seems to happen with EE more than any other breed I have seen.  I wonder if they are harder to sex at the hatcheries.

Congratulations!!!   I hope you are able to get everything done in time.

Good to hear your girls is settling in better now.  It can take the a while to figure out their place.   Has she started laying again yet?

I don't think I have ever seen a Magpie up here on the ridge.  We don't get mocking birds either...they are one of the things I miss most about San Jose.

I see that advertised all the time on TV.  Is it the "Jolly Giant"?  I wish we has something similar here.

Thanks for the warning!   I'm surprised he didn't offer to send a truck to pick it up.    I have had them do that when I advertise stuff on CL. A matter of fact he did. Not only that, he kept forgetting Sunday and Monday Memorial Day, the mail doesn't run. A real ditz.

One year I noticed my hummingbird feeder swaying like crazy out on the front porch. I took a closer look and saw a huge American Goldfinch on it trying to drink the nectar out of it. It was the only one I have ever seen at my house. I didn't even know they would have any interest in nectar. It sure was gorgeous!

I had the same thing happen but it was an Oriole. I went to Tractor Supply & bought an Oriole feeder in hopes of luring it here but NOPE.!!!!!

I love them too. I was obsessed with taking pictures of them on my recent trip to England.

Theirs are a bit different than ours.

Big beautiful birds. The Magpie here the yellow billed one is the only bird that is indigenous to California. I was surprised to learn that. I have a library of bird books, an interest that my aunt & I share. We used to call each other regularly trying to identify a new bird one of us would see.

Exactly what I was thinking...hold them until all have been laid and set them at the same time. That way there won't be one hatching every day for 10 days. What does everyone else think?

I personally think too many staggered hatches lowers your hatchability chances. The fewer times you mess with the incubator the better hatch you have. Of course there are a lot of variables. I found in the Brinsea cabinet my best staggered hatches came when I settled to weekly intervals when setting new eggs, but that was because I had 4 shelves & the rotation of eggs to the hatcher worked well for that. Of course that was after a lot of trial an error experimentation.

I will need your help identifying them though.  You had the foam marked but there was no way to keep the eggs separated.  I have some almost all brown, aome all yellow, some yellow with chipmunk and some in between.

Oh the foam lied. The yellow stripes are manchurian all yellow texas a and m the big browns jm pharoah the brown with spots tibetian tuxs. Let me know if you get any manchurian tuxedos I may want to buy them back or bribe you..

I have popcorn in my Genesis!!!!

The Cots are hatching and, like before with the BobWhites there were none last night at bedtime and 17 out this morning at 7:00 AM. There are 39 eggs that made it to lockdown, but it is so hard to see anything with the spotted eggs.

Nice!

Do you have a separate pen for them?
Good deal.................congratulations. It never gets old does it? My goodness Ron...I wonder where you got those?????.....LOL

Yes, they are from @capayvalleychick

I move them to a separate Genesis 1588 that I use for hatching. Works like a charm so far!
