California - Northern

Oh I couldn't help myself...I took a VERY quick peek into my Tolbunt Polish eggs. Did not touch them or move them. It's not day 7 yet but this is what I saw in one of them!!! Is it sad that this is one of the most exciting things I've ever done? Lol!

I'm so excited. Hopefully the other one will show veins when I candle on day 7. Is it possible for eggs that are viable to not be showing veins on day 5?
Congrats! You're as bad as I am, lol.

I have popcorn in my Genesis!!!!

The Cots are hatching and, like before with the BobWhites there were none last night at bedtime and 17 out this morning at 7:00 AM. There are 39 eggs that made it to lockdown, but it is so hard to see anything with the spotted eggs.

Congrats, they're cute!

I move them to a separate Genesis 1588 that I use for hatching. Works like a charm so far!

The cabinet has 3 moving shelves & a stationary one which is the floor of the cabinet which has the tray for hatching. After much experimentation on hatching Marans eggs I came up with a setting that worked pretty well for me & stuck to it. I was able to hatch multiple breeds & still have some success with the Marans all in the cabinet, but I do have extra styro incubators that I could use as a hatcher & that would add a week to the rotation. I honestly haven't tried that yet but then I am always trying to talk myself DOWN from hatching.....LOL. Next year I hope to hatch for others to satisfy my yearnings.......LOL. I am getting the Brinsea back soon. The 4H family I loaned it to are about finished for the season.

There is a cool video of a dog and a magpie playing together. Cooler than standard crows but pretty much the same. Ive had 2 mocking birds killed in Rat traps in my garden the last couple of years

One got caught by a snap trap baited with peanut butter. The other got caught on a glue trap in the middle of my strawberry patch. I really feel sorry about the glue trap one but the snap trap is its own darn fault.

Lately there have been a couple of California quail hanging around near my house. They flew to my roof the this weekend at first I thought it was the doves that nest in the cherry tree in the front yard but I looked up just in time to see them land on the roof line before taking off again. Working outside all weekend I got a chance to hear the rooster someone in the neighborhood has. (Its possible its on the small horse boarders land that is surrounded by most of our neighborhood) It was crowing almost all weekend. Its far enough away that its rather faint but still distinctive.

My body is rebelling against all the construction work today. Ouch.

I'll be checking the nestbox throughout the day to see if I can catch any of the white layers laying an egg - Carolina is in the nest box right now so I know the first white egg I get this morning will be from her, that's one less infertile egg to set. Thanks for the idea, I'll be checking on the nest boxes as often as I can. :)

It was just too hard to not take a peek. I even took a peek into the eggs again today when I was refilling the water tray. Could not help myself. So far it looks like 5 of my Trader Joe's eggs are developing! The white eggs are easy to do quick peeks into because they don't have to be touched or moved.

How do you guys refill the water trays in the Gensis 1588? I had to take out the turner/eggs because I couldn't see the trays otherwise. Since my table isn't big enough to hold both the Gensis AND the turner(just a small little table that it's setting on) I had to balance the turner on the edge of the Gensis, and that's a bit dangerous for the eggs. I don't want to have to do that again, but without taking out the turner I can't see how full the water tray is, even when shining a light in it.

be extra careful your chickens don't pass stuff on if you have local quail.
