California - Northern

I just went to look at the eggs in my bator, knowing that they wouldn't have hatched yet because they're not due until the 11th...forgetting bantams often hatch early....you can imagine my surprise when I saw a newly hatched little baby in there!!! EEP!! My first ever hatch! It looks great, it's just tired and still wet so it must have JUST hatched. My first ever baby to hatch is a little Black Tail White Japanese Bantam.

How very exciting! WHOOP WHOOP!
It was 104 here in Antioch yesterday. Today it is only supposed to be 96 but I'm preparing myself for higher than that. I've already watered down areas in the pens and will water down under the bushes where the girls like to sit. I have a big seeded watermelon for them that I'm going to cut and chill this morning. Food Max has big seeded ones right now, Chris.
Food Max :) Love it - Seeded watermelons being so much more fun if you are a chicken.

I wanted to share an email that I got yesterday that still has me amazed. This is from a Kindergarten teacher who set 12 Cream Legbar eggs for her class science project.
This goes to show you, if a chick has the will to hatch it will.

Hi Deann,

Just a quick update on the hatching project...

I can't wait to hatch again next year! Your eggs are great!

What a great story, thank you so much for sharing! You should put that on your website. It's an AMAZING story!

Think I could be a little less obsessive about 1/2 degree fluctuations?

I do think the CLB hatch easier than some. I like hatching them. The SFH.... not so much. They are beautiful birds though so I suppose I will just keep at it!

Now THAT'S a good morning. :)
I am hoping to find pipped (if not hatched) turkey eggs when I check the coop today. :fingers crossed

@ those are gorgeous birds!!
All these hatching stories make me want to do it, too!

Update on my flocks - the BSO runt is still with us. The cat is apparently completely trained not to eat my other pets, which is actually reassuring. I had already picked up a much healthier BSL, so now I have 3 1-week olds. The 2nd BSL has a lot of rust brown in her face and is very striking. The runt is black and white. Maybe they came from different clutches? Or different hen/rooster mixes?
With all the heat outside, I have them outside in a small fenced area within sight and hearing of my 6-week olds. Penny, my smart EE, noticed them when they were on me getting mealworms but stayed her distance. She always flies up to me when she thinks it's time for the mealworm treats. I think she is respecting me as the mother hen to her AND the new batch.
I started fermenting the chick starter leftovers and Henry & Penny love it! The 1-week olds are skeptical, however. It is nice I don't have to toss half the feed - that stuff isn't cheap. :)
I'm off to find some watermelon and more ice for the waterer. Thanks for all the heat mitigation ideas - do you water down the run before they get in or while they are in?

LOL, that would be fun.

They are actually Silver Campine, a Belgian breed of chicken that is nearly nonexistent in Belgium anymore. Last I heard 8 of the 12 were developing. Unfortunately I couldn't send any extras. The girls weren't cooperating and we were on a TIGHT timeline to not miss the connecting flight over the pond.

It's kind of like the reverse of when Germany sent back our New Hampshires!
