For a bantam that rooster is a SOLID chunk of bird. I am very impressed. His talons are insane.
Question: My friend has hatchery Buff Orps. I brought her 2 of my BOs that I got from a breeder. Her BOs are a deep deep orange and most of them have huge combs (well I thought they were roosters- but they are laying eggs lol). My BOs have a soft buttery orange, looser feathers and the hens virtually NO comb. Will mine get more orange and larger combs? Or is that one of the differences between hatchery and breeder quality? Her hens are are maybe 4-6 weeks older than my big girls (about 22 weeks old for my big girls).
Hello All!
I live in auburn, Ca and I am new here. I have been looking around for a while, but decided it was finally time to start posting!
My 3 chickens are 13 weeks old, and 2 are roosters! Ack. Anyone have tips in the Northern CA area of who will take my roosters and where to find similar age pullets? I've been searching and posting on craigslist with only a little bit of luck.
Thanks for everyone's help and I look forward to learning more and getting to know everyone!

Ohhh kay! This helps so much. We were both like...huh? LOL So my BO pullets (later hens) will get big red combs, will keep their current buttery orange color, and continue to be soft and fluffy (her BOs feathers seem a little tighter?). She has one of my cockerels (and pullets) and this will breed some of those qualities into her flock right? She has some RIRs- I wonder what a BO x RIR looks like...hmmmm. heheHi Amy,
They will get a lot bigger LOL.! Orpingtons are large and do have large combs. They get to be so large, that you can pen them in with an 18 inch fence!
Hatchery of anything is usually smaller. Your heritage Orps will probably not change colors and you are seeing better quality feathers because the are Heritage birds.
I do not know if it is true(like the disclaimer?) but I read a post here that said hatchery birds have leghorn in them to make them lay more and to help with feather sexing.
Also, They are pullets until they are a year old and some heritage breeds continue to grow into the second year. Their combs and wattles will seem to explode into the big girl version over night when they are about to start laying eggs.
It is impressive that you have such quality chickens so soon.![]()

Awwww!
That is seriously awesome!WelcomeEcho Valley feed store takes them. You don't get anything for them and they do sell them for $5.00 dollars. It is a last resort when you really need them gone. You will need to call ahead of time and ask if they have any empty cages (they fill up fast with unwanted chickens) and they will put your name on the cage with a hold sign.![]()
I have two 15 week old buff EE pullets and two 12 week old black laced red Wyandotte pullets available. I am about a half hour away from you.
Ok you hatchers. If I can get my little bantam hen to lay in the next few weeks...how long can I store them and they will be good? So, say she lays an egg every other day or every 2 days...I would like to try to hang on to them in case she goes broody (or if anyone in Redding wants to hatch them for me? hehe) and then put them under her? How long will they keep 'fertile' and how best to store them?
