@petrock
My daughter says mottled white :-( I am in bed ,threw my back out In the process...
I'll recheck when I can. Is it possible to use him to get a yellow leg cockerel or does he have to scat now?
Ah what to do what to do!

My understanding is white legs are dominant over yellow, so it will be hard to breed out using a cockerel with white legs.

The problem we have is the reliance on 100 year old books and genetic theories. Shank color is not a simple dominance and recessive thing. Some think it is 5 genes while others think it is 3.

From working with the Basque and reading the experiences they have had getting yellow shanks, it is likely that the white shank boy paired with yellow shank hens will produce chicks with yellow shanks.

Relying on 100 year old books is one thing that bothered me on the Heritage threads.

Keep your boy and if he is nice, gets along with others and looks good otherwise breed him!

Yes, I bet I will have a yellow legged boy or two this year.

There is always next year.

One thing to remember, these came from a flock of 6 and there is not much of a chance of getting more from another source.

I have not found any others in the US. Someone said there were but they are not around now as far as I can tell.

Everyone thanks so much for the well wishes.

Aletheia Danae Purcell ...
Lovely name.

Not all Silkie chicks, even from top breeders, have vaulted skulls. I hatched eggs bought from Catdance Silkies and not all of them have vaulted skulls. I then did a test hatch when my birds started laying and wasn't sure which hen was laying. Turns out the eggs must have been from my blue pullet without a vaulted skull x my porcelain rooster with a vaulted skull, and got two blue partridge chicks and neither have vaulted skulls. So I'm sure that breeders have chicks for sale without vaulted skulls and sell them as pets.

These are the two 8 week old blue partridge chicks I hatched.

Maybe I'll have to get chicks then instead of hatching eggs.

I tried to make him eat like i did the other day abd hr wouldnt and hes just been like convulsing in his box.. i culled him the way i do whennn i process roosters... ddoes me it make me a bad person that i culled him?he couldnt eat or drink and was just fflqiling hisneck And looking like he was seizing so i deiced on not allowing him to suffer. sprry for the spelling im crying
I think you did the right thing for him.

And I have many yellow legged boys that will just be eaten if someone doesn't want them. I am only looking for one good one to add to my breeding program so will probably keep 3 or 4 from this year's hatches and decide on 1 when they are more mature.
