California - Northern

Oh, today was another good day- my parents made it back to California. That is one less trip and dozens less chickens to care for. Woo hoo!

After my first hatch, I am also already lending out my incubator already. I'm nervous about getting it back in a timely manner and in the same condition, but she played dirty and sent her nine year old to ask me.

Look into St. Augustine (sp) grass; it spreads like Bermuda grass but has wide, round tipped blades. It did pretty good in the northern Sac valley and is supposed to do even better with some humidity (which we have none).  And Welcome!

Yea! Pics of course!

I'll look into it thanks for the tip!

The bay just got their breeze back so it's not supposed to be so hot today. Anybody else getting lucky?

2003 half ton Chevy silverado!

Know the feeling, I've got a 73 Dodge 1/2 ton, get 10 mpg on a good day.

Today is lockdown! Just took the eggs out of the turner. All the EE eggs look very full with no room left for the chick to grow, however many of the Trader Joe's eggs still have a lot of room left in them, enough that I can still see movement in there. They were set the same day as the EE eggs, and today is day 18. One only looks half full but it's still moving! Are they going to hatch late? Will they still hatch? I'm worried :(

Mine looked like that but since I saw movement I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

My herding-obsessed dog saw me messing with the eggs in the incubator(taking them out of the turner and letting them roll into hatching position)...she learned last hatch that when momma is messing with the incubator, there are chicks inside that MUST. BE. HERDED. Now she won't leave the incubator alone, she's just sitting there staring at it. Not even looking through the display window, but just sitting and staring at the side of it. She cracks me up.

She's too cute!

Good to know!

you people suck :( all the hatching going on and i cant even hatch one egg and none of my hens will brood.
any idea why my hens arent laying?

Maybe the heat?

Gonna be 101 here, so a little better.

My guess would be you have an internal pip and she can hear the chick chirping.

@tommysgirl

I am working on lockdown tonight!

Pita Pinta and Konza Rangers are in the incubator!
7 eggs total? I feel like a 1950s father pacing the waiting room waiting for his baby to be born. Godiva is ready she is so HUGE and Fluffy I bet she could manage 18 but 7 or so will be a good first go for her. When she is puffed up and doing her broody rampage around the yard she looks as big as my NH rooster.

The heat was rough on her yesterday but I opened up all the coop door so she gets air circulating. She hovered over her golf balls rather than sitting on them yesterday. I am sure she will be happy when she gets these babies.

Thank you again Ron!

@chiqita I have both silkie broodies sharing the same space. I was nervous about it because the one was belligerent with my Australorp broody when they shared a space...for about 3 minutes...but these two are besties and my sizzle seems to know her place and the two get along quite well. One of the Marans chicks (Blue Wheaten??) who is under the sizzle is a nest hopper and likes to see what the other kids are up to. Gracie Belle tolerates it. I am smitten with that little one therefore you know it must be a cockerel.

Another of Laura's chicks is enormously gorgeous....Blue Isbar/Black Marans...I am equally enamored of it so it will also be a cockerel. I don't know why people bother sending pictures and guessing sex on chickens...they should just hire me and which ever I find the most beautiful or to have the best chickenality...those will be their boys.

That's about 12 miles to the gallon....what are you driving?

Or get a cng truck and pay 2 bucks a gallon for gas... This is my secret!

It was about 112 here:( I installed new misters in the runs this morning, because the old ones weren't functional anymore. Chickens seemed to be pretty comfortable today with the help of the misters. My horse was a bit uncomfortable by late afternoon. So, I gave her a bath . The dogs then decided if the horse was getting sprayed with a hose then they should of course get wet too. I ended up smelling like wet horse and wet dog, LOL.

Trisha

We got to about 96 then plummeted fast! We were 86 in an hour. I bought a bag of peaches at the market for 3 bucks and froze them and dispenced peaches and peas at 96... they got eaten fast.

Our coop is under the house and stays cool. And under the huge covered porch. No one looked bad yesterday it is usually day 4 that we get critical. I did give soaked fruit to the broodies to keep them hydrated. Works well.

Yay, Sunnyvale!!

Yes!! Im in san jose. Huzzah south bay!

If they are sitting together they will share about 80% of the time. The chicks sometimes all pick one mother however..

I hope you get your trio!

Cute babies will hatch soon.

Need some hatching advise. I have the Brinsea Octagon 20 ECO (no pump) and I can't seem to get the humidity over 60% (it's steady). I have both water basins filled and a sheet of flannel wicking out of one. I'm right at the beginning of day 19. Should I open it up and put flannel (or something else) to wick from the other basin also? Or just leave it alone and hope? I only have 2 eggs going so I'm guessing the humidity won't go up much when hatching starts. Is that correct?

ETA: I have the vent 1/2 closed; don't want to close it any more.

They are brooding together but didn't sit together. One hatched eggs the other got 3 marans chicks from Laura on Friday night after sitting for about a week. Maybe that little wheaten marans chick is picking its own mother. The broody hatched chicks are 4 days younger but are bigger and way more "out there" si maybe it has decided that group is the one to be a part of

Me too...if I can get a pair I am good with that too.

Darn, those are too cute. I many need a few in my pet bantam flock. Do you sell eggs?
Thanks

They are VERY addicting! The hens are super sweet and friendly. The only matching "color" pair I have right now are the khaki quail. That hen is laying, but not often. I plan on keeping all the mottled pullet chicks (blue, black, chocolate) a pair of MF, and a porcelain cockerel for my porcelain hen. So hopefully by the fall I will have eggs for sale in those colors.
