I am looking forward to meeting some of these ^^ Do you have any pullets that are 6ish weeks old right now? @ronott1 I am tickled with my two. I feel like the little late hatcher is a pullet but am sure hoping both are. The bigger white one is very adventurous and gets itself into trouble. I am thinking it is a little cockerel but I sure hope not! I know it is too soon to tell

Speaking of sexing what are clues with Ameraucana/Easter Eggers? I know that most of you don't have them now but maybe you have had them in the past @debs_flock ??? I have 3 5 week olds and I think they are the same sex since other than their color they are indistinguishable. Any help would be appreciated.

Depending on how pure they are, you can tell from the peas. Cockerels have more rows of peas and will start getting bigger and pinkish at 5 or 6 weeks old. Also, any wattle, especially pink in color is a boy.

Very cool! I saw gold cuckoo Marans, but they too are pretty pricey because of being "rare". It's good to know though, I've had pretty bad results with my Marans.

GCM eggs are reasonably priced. Sorry to hear you have had bad luck with Marans. My Marans are the most vigorous birds I own.

Depending on how pure they are, you can tell from the peas. Cockerels have more rows of peas and will start getting bigger and pinkish at 5 or 6 weeks old. Also, any wattle, especially pink in color is a boy.

X2 The cockerels have 3 rows of peas and the pullets a single row. Brightly colored feathers coming in on the shoulders is also an indication of a cockerel.

so we decided we will probably be adopting a Hound this weekend.
its down to a Black and Tan Coonhound boy 6 months or a female black,brindle Plott hound 6 month old.
these are both at the Coonhound Rescue in Sutter creek saved from Puppy Mills but in healthy shape .
we had wanted a young pup so Baxter our other lab could help train it in the ways of being a good dog but the rescue seems like
a good alternative. Helping a good cause and still being able to get a Hound. I want to tach it how to tree Raccoons lol
hence the hound.
I hear the Plott Hound are a great treeing breed

I don't really know anything about Plott Hounds, but at one point I thought very seriously about getting a Black and Tan. They are a lovely dog. Personally, I love the bay........not sure how neighbors would like it

I had always wanted a Redbone but love all of them so unique. Just hard to pass the chance to give a dog in need a home and with the rescue it also helps to get the breed you like

Yay for rescue! We have aquired dogs in a variety of ways from strays to reputable breeders and everything in between but I personally have had the best relationships with our rescues. Hope it all goes well for you.

I am really liking my Birchen Marans babies from Laura. The older brooder crew are more friendly but the broody raised group is also willing to let me sit and have a look at them. There is at least one pullet confirmed in the older group so I am really happy about that. Another is a question mark and the third is all boy.

My golden cuckoo Marans are great layers and auto sexing. They lay a nice dark egg and the pullets I hatched out last year, started laying in September, laid all winter and are still laying strong. I usually get 2-3 eggs a day from 4 hens.

They sound like a fantastic flock!

Not that they are the best layers but I have some 14 week Buff Orps (pullets) that need a new home. sorry shameless plug I really need to get rid of the fosters. Im pretty sure Im not going to get what I want for them but finding them a new home is probably more important now.

If I was going to be in Antioch I'd probably help you out. Hope you can find a home for them.

Easy, any my daughter loves enough to name will be male. The least attractive ones will be female. That just leaves the middle ground to wait for eggs or crowing on.

Seriously, though, by five weeks my EE cockerels' comb and wattles were definitely well on the way to coloring and plumping up. With mixed breeds, it can be tough to tell for a while. There is this gigantic thread that may help you: .

I love hounds! Not to sway you, but my very first 'pound pup' was a Plott Hound/ Shepherd mix and she was an absolutely fantastic dog. I got her as an adult so we only got a few years with her, but I'd absolutely love to own another Plott/Plott Mix some day because of her. My dad had some Black and Tans when I was a teenager. You know how hounds can range from absolutely majestic to absolute dorks (usually switching back and forth between the two)? Well, the Black and Tans were 99% dork. Absolute doofuses, but lovable and SO handsome looking. I'd love to see pictures of whoever ends up being the right one for you.


In my news, Grandma has surprised my kids with a duckling for each of them. Given to them while I was at work.

I love ducks and I've had to talk myself out of them often, but live animals do not make good surprise gifts at least 90% of the time, and certainly not for kids too small to take care of them themselves without letting the parents know. Neither on is even a breed of duck I'd been considering (and she knew I'd narrowed it down to Cayuga, Swedish, Black East India and Ancona for the future). AND she knows I don't like mixing bantam and large fowl- so she gets one Mallard and one Pekin or Jumbo Pekin- she didn't remember which. I know I sound horribly ungrateful, but I'm not entirely sure what to do with this odd couple. Has anyone kept quite differently sized ducks together?
