California - Northern

Thank you everyone for the condolences. I'm going to miss Penny a lot, especially her excessive squatting. Every time I walked up to her she'd squat. Sometimes, all I'd have to do is look at her and she would squat. None of my other hens, besides Darla(who was the other SS who passed over a month ago), squat like that. It was really funny. Every time I would open the nest box when she was in there, she would stand up just to squat! Lol!
I get so sad over deaths that I don't even want to be around my hens. But I fall in love with them again every time I see them. Today we had leftover spaghetti and I went out and gave it to them. I have some babies that are about 1/4 the size of the adult hens, they're living with the adults. They know to stay away from the big girls when they're eating, and when one of the girls advances towards them. Everyone gets along really well because the little ones know their place. Well today, I threw spaghetti over the fence and it was a riot...the big girls all starting grabbing big mouthfuls of it, but the babies REALLY wanted it, too. So, they decided they'd sneak pieces when the big girls weren't looking. They got pecked a few times but they didn't care, they'd go right back to running in, grabbing a piece, then sprinting away. Then, all 4 babies would start fighting over the piece that someone had snuck away from the big girls.
I love chickens.

so we decided we will probably be adopting a Hound this weekend.
its down to a Black and Tan Coonhound boy 6 months or a female black, brindle Plott hound 6 month old.
these are both at the Coonhound Rescue in Sutter creek saved from Puppy Mills but in healthy shape .
we had wanted a young pup so Baxter our other lab could help train it in the ways of being a good dog but the rescue seems like
a good alternative. Helping a good cause and still being able to get a Hound. I want to tach it how to tree Raccoons lol
hence the hound.
I hear the Plott Hound are a great treeing breed

My daughter had 2 Plott Hounds when she was in college; both were very gentle, intelligent dogs who loved everybody, and wanted to assist everyone whatever they were doing. Both were calm for a hound dog, but, had the tendency of following their noses. I would recommend keeping close eye on the hounds when they are around the birds.

Not that they are the best layers but I have some 14 week Buff Orps (pullets) that need a new home. sorry shameless plug I really need to get rid of the fosters. Im pretty sure Im not going to get what I want for them but finding them a new home is probably more important now.
You shouldn't have an issue finding a home for them. I have a Cream Legbar cockerel I'm trying to find a home for. I have WAY too many birds right now.

My friend adopted a black and tan coonhound last year. She is a wonderful dog, very mellow, until she sees a squirrel. She is great with her chickens and goes out with her on the nightly close up to run off critters. I don't know anything about Plott hounds. (though I googled them and they are very pretty)

You guys will remember how one of my two Speckled Sussex, Darla, passed away a month+ ago. Necropsy said she had an infection of her reproductive tract, which must have burst somewhere because there were eggs loose in her abdominal cavity. Well tonight I went to close up the coop and I noticed my other Speckled Sussex, Penny, was not in there. That is not like her to not go to the coop at night. So I called out my family and we all searched the yard for her. It took about 5 minutes but we finally found her, underneath some bushes...dead. I picked her up and just cried with my entire family watching me. Her body was still limp which leads me to believe that she had just recently died, which means it probably was not the heat. Plus she survived a day of 113 degree heat, so I don't know why she wouldn't be able to survive the heat today. Anyways, tomorrow I'm going to send her off for necropsy. She's in the fridge right now. I'm heartbroken, she was one of my favorites, and my best friends favorite. She was my best friends chicken, because she named Penny(Penelope Turtle Rose) when she was just a baby. I'm down to 4 hens now. Rest in peace Penny. An old picture, just before she hit POL.

Other than when in a breeding pen, my waterfowl all run together, three breeds of geese & four breeds of ducks. That goes from African geese down to Call ducks. They all get along together fine.
There is not a huge size difference there. Youll be fine. Neither are great layers however...

@BCollie I am so sorry. Speckled Sussex are special. I am really sorry that you lost both of yours. If it isn't too soon to think about, it may make you feel better that Papabrooder has hatching eggs if you want to add a couple more back in to the mix.

@JDXX also has Silver Sussex over in Fort Bragg. I am planning a trip to Redding with my mom in the fall and I don't see why I couldn't bring you eggs or chicks from JDXX if they are available.

Someone has Coronations too...45 Farm?? Anyway now that you have an incubator Nor cal people can hook you up when you are ready.

I was pondering what to do with the little ones this morning and figured the bowl of pine shaving would work while I cleaned the brooder. They did not stay in there very long but it did let me take a nice picture!

I am so sorry but there are times, like this when the phrase "totes adorbs" seems to be the only one that fits. If my daughters were on BYC I would be disowned for using it...
