I was pondering what to do with the little ones this morning and figured the bowl of pine shaving would work while I cleaned the brooder. They did not stay in there very long but it did let me take a nice picture!

I have a question about chicken colors & their proper names.
I'd love anyone to chime in with their thoughts.
Is this considered a "sport"?
She's a standard polish, white with black flecks & specks.

I thought a Sport was a bird that did not reflect the standard coloring for its breed.

So does "didn't stay in there long" translate to "they had me chasing them around" or "the brooder was easy to clean and they were very polite to stay put"

One of the Crele Penedesenca x Cream Legbar chicks jumped out. The Pita Pintas were calmer.

It was a quick change though. I had paper towels ready to swap back in. They will go onto pine shavings next change.

Ok the Frozen 2 liters seem to work well enough but it seems I need one for each bird as they like to stand on them and dont always seem so steady.

Im considering making a cool down box where I can place 4-5 of these bottles underneath a hardware cloth floor and place a shade roof enclosure over that allowing the birds to come and stand or lay down and the cold to be somewhat trapped. Might even add 16-20 oz bottle holders on the sides with small personal fan add light breeze across the bottles. Add my misters to the box and might work.

Any thoughts.

I do not do anything for them until it gets to 100 and then I run my Orbit misters.

Was trying to come up with a way to reduce the "muddy: birds

The orbit misters do not make mud.

Does it get over 100 much in Antioch? If I run the mister when the temperatures are too low, I will get some wetness on the ground.

It can and I do not have much natural shade in my yard. temps get to the high ninety's quite frequently according to the monitoring sight my place always feels really hot during those times.

I think my birds do not know what to make of near 100 one day and 60 some odd the next morning.

I make sure they have cool water to drink. When it gets hot I usually bring out a dog dish of cool water a couple of times during the height of the heat

Super cute! Love the litlle Pintas! I am definetely going to have to get some to hatch this fall.

We conducted our taste test last night and compared a Bresse cockerel (24 wks) to a Pita Pinta cockerel (19-20 wks). We roasted them with salt, pepper, butter, onion, and celery. Four thumbs up for the dual purpose Pita Pintas!!! They were both very tasty but Monet and I preferred the PP over the Bresse. The Bresse meat was a little chewier but since he was 4-5 weeks older than the PP that might have made some difference in the texture. The Bresse had more dark meat and it was very dark colored. The PP dark meat was only slightly darker than the breast meat. Both had a decent amount of white meat and both were very flavorful. This has almost persuaded me to not build my Bresse flock back up but to stick with my BBS Langshans and my Pita Pintas.
