When I called OSU about necropsy prices I was told they start at 120.00, and that was basically a visual exam.

All our county fairs have P/T testing done by the State vets to survey backyard flock health.

GOT MY FIRST EGG TODAY!!! It was pretty small and I have no idea who laid it.  However it was NOT in the nest boxes it was on the coop floor in the corner.  So I have a few questions.  My nesting boxes are about 2 feet high. Is this to high for my orpingtons? Because they don't roost either. They all huddle up in the corner of the coop. I have tried setting a few on the roost, but they just won't have it.  So I am concerned that they are gonna continue to lay in the dirt corner.  What should I do?

Congrats on the egg! My heavy girls don't like the 24" roosts I put in either, they will use the roosts 18" off the floor.

Isn't that exciting? Yippee!
First question: Do they have a landing upon which they can land and then step into the next boxes? That will make it easier for them. I had big English Orps that would fly up the 3 ft to my next box landing, but others that walked up the ramp to get to them. They mostly walked up a ramp to roost as well. Big girls!

Have you put some fake eggs in the nest boxes to encourage them to lay in the right place? I had a RIR that started laying in the run when she first started, but figured it out after about two weeks. (Except when all four boxes were full and she had to lay NOW!

Congrats! Sometimes it takes them a while to figure out that the egg is coming and make it to the nest box. I would not change anything yet. If they are hatchery Orps, they will probably be fine where they are. If they are English Orps, then they might not be able to make it 2 feet up.

How high are your roosts? My big coop has the first roost at 18 inches, then the next is 18 inches higher (and 18 inches back) and the next is 18 inches higher (and 18 inches back). They hop on the lower one, then hop up to the others.

I've had my first few soft shell eggs and one that didn't seem to get the full compliment of color applied and feels thin shelled.

I've read its normal for new layers to have this happen. They have oyster shell free choice and they do eat it.They have King Layer crumbles as their main feed. Though they got quite a bit of fruit the last week.

I'm considering adding a bit of crushed egg shell to the fermented feed I just started giving them which was made from flock raiser feed.

Should I be concerned yet that the calcium is too low? I have one layer who has been delivering nice eggs for a week now.

Agree that they will likely figure it out but if you want to put a nest box in that corner of the run they probably won't be mad about it.

They need supplemental calcium if they are on flock raiser. Sometimes even if they are on a layer but it should be offered on the side not mixed in.

When in doubt, give extra oyster shell.

In continued chicken biz. Yesterday a sweet lady in her late 70s came to me to get a cockerel

and a few girls to keep him company and ease the transition into her flock of older girls. I was tickled that she took that BEAUTIFUL little Ice cream bar from Lawatt and for pullets she took a NH Dorking SL, and Easter Egger from papabrooder and a NH/Australorp mystery chick who has developed like a Black SL. Solid balck at hatch then developing the gold makrings on her chest and head. NG/AL aren't supposed to create a SL at all but this little gal has black legs so she has to be from an Australorp mama. Who knows but they all have gone to their new home.

Keeping the rest of my confirmed girls and setting up camp Kenmore for my 3 Del Boys this week. They will be 16 weeks old at the end of the month.

The other younger boys will all be heading to camp once I process these 3. I am looking forward to doing a flavor comparison between the Marans and the Dorking crosses.

My youngest batch of chicks (1.5 weeks) are the so far unsexed NH/Amelia babies. The boys will feather out crele hopefully there will be a pullet or two among this group so I can get a comparison. I should be able to figure them out at about 3 weeks.

I filled my flock with broody breeds and have had 8 broodies since March. Truthfully I have loved every second of it even the logistical issues of housing 3 broodzillas in one pen and another in a pen with teenaged chicks.

I am pretty sure I am not finished...I did add two silkies after all but it is nice to be able to see my numbers decreasing instead of increasing.
