For those interested in learning more about Marek's, BYC's Nambroth has done a lot of research and has written this:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/the-great-big-giant-mareks-disease-faq

She (Nambroth) and Seminolewind are a couple of people that have had more than their fair share of Marek's birds, and because of that, I have found both of them to be very good resources.

I read this, and a whole lot more, when I was buying my chicks this spring. the lady I was buying them from vaccinates all her birds at 24hr old. IMO it is something that all chicken parents should have at least a basic understanding of; that and the pros/cons of vaccinating. I personally, after much research, chose not to vaccinate and because of this will only get either hatching eggs or day-old unvaccinated chicks. I would consider getting older birds only from flocks that are also unvaccinated (but will probably stick with eggs, so much more fun!)

ETA: I got my chicks before she vaccinated.

Quote: Kathy...where is a goofd place to get the feeding tubes? I was planning to try it with fish airlne tubing if she had still been alive the next day. I have hand fed hatchling finches so am pretty comfortable with the process, but have no idea where to get the real feeding tubes.

Daughter just messaged me its my first 3 egg day. 3/4 squat so good news. 23 weeks this week so good early layers. The only one not laying is the one which seemed to be my best bird when it comes to SOP. Very happy with Privets Delawares and their Buff orps as far as back yard flocks go.
That's great! I think I have a pullet that has started to lay, but not sure who. I can never catch the bird in the nest. Problem is....none of my pullets should be laying light brown eggs. I have one FBCM and two OE from Chickengirl1304 and one Mott AM from Luvinbluechickens that are all close to POL. The Marans looks like she should be laying, but these are very light eggs and she should be laying dark ones. I am stumped as to who the layer is.

Quote: It could be that it it was though. If the other tests come back negative then I will have to assume that was at least a contributing factor. And I appreciate you mentioning the multiple sources. It is not something that would have even occured to me. I most definitley will now though....

Wasn't the bird 14 weeks? If they thought it was an adult that might be why they thought it was malnurished

Free geese in Gilroy. Owner moving and must find homes for 8 geese. Some are adults, some are goslings, just not sure how many of each. Some gray, some white.

Ok thank you. I always like to learn things to look for

thank you ladies. I really like her but she's a bit skiddish. But I didn't realize I'd enjoy the breed so much :)
My jubilees were too. I made it a point to pick them up every day and seemed as soon as they started laying they calmed way way down :)

Yes, she was 14 weeks, but she had definitley lost weight too. I could tell that as soon as I picked her up. They also ask about age on the form so they are aware of her age. I think they are familiar with what birds should be like at the different ages with all the necropsies they do.

We bought our tube feeding catheters from http://greatmedicalsupplies.com. Sizes I use most are 8, 10, 16, 18 and Big Bertha, the size 30. Will post brand names when I get off this stupid iPad and on a computer. Also have some pictures of the ones I use. :D

Thank you Kathy! I appreciate that. The sizes were my next question, so thanks for including that info.

Quick question. What doe it mean if one of my ducklings is breathing pretty fast. Mouth is closed no panting but pretty quick breaths compared to the other one

The vaccine reduces the cancer death by 3 to 5%. It does not stop the initial infection.

10 to 15% of chickens that have Mareks initial infection(Herpes virus) will develop and die of cancer at about two years old.

We cannot stop this from happening. If you own chickens, some will die of Mareks Cancer.

Ahh, I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I was wondering more about how effective the vaccination is against tumor growth. Though as a related question, with the understanding that vaccinations are not necessarily benign, what problems the vaccination itself brings with it. I wish the test for the genes that confer resistance or susceptibility was available and reasonably priced- they've found the genes, hurry up with the test!

LOL- but I'll bet my questions will all be answered on Nambroth's page. ;)
