California - Northern

We were in the run the other day with the chickens in the evening and my daughter was holding one of the dels when one of the laid a softshell egg right there in the run. We had been feeding them treats so they all saw it drop and they attacked and ate it. We arent sure if it was laid by the chicken my daughter was holding or by the one who hasnt started laying yet.It was just such a surprise and over quick that we are not exactly sure what happened. Ive been consistently getting 2 eggs a day from 3 chickens that I know lay. The 3 egg days are intermittent still. Verna is so much heavier than the others so we think that might have something to do with it. Ive read that heavier hens lay less.

So I think a 4 egg day may be coming soon.

Well, Frieda (formally Nameless) is officially no longer broody--she laid an egg this morning.
Would you tell mine to stop too? I am tired of screaming, puff balls hogging the nesting boxes!

blue pullet on cinder block sister of pullet that produced #5 above (look identical, waiting to see if eggs identical)
black pullet Oe offspring of #2 above (sister lays light olive)
barred pullet Oe offspring from CLroo x black mixed hen
blue pullet lower right multiple mixes, waiting for egg color... =)

Papa thought maybe some Postal worker put the box in the window or something. It was definitley very hot during that time. Sounds like picking them up is the way to go.

Sorry she broke. Any other potential broodies for you? Mine are all starting to lose a lot of feathers...even the one raising chicks. So far no more broodies for me right now.

They are definitley fast when an egg hits the ground! I have dropped one or two in the run before and nearly lost a fingetr trying to pick it up. Fingers crossed for that "4 egg Day"!

Intersting eggs...especially that top middle one. It almost looks like it was decorated. I have a couple of OE pullets but they haven't started to lay yet.

This is the BLRW cockerel that is feathering out wierd. He is 12 weeks old as of yesterday but his feathering is very patchy. Any suggestions on what might be causing this? He is the only one with this prolema dn even younger birds have more feathering than him. The Mottled AM EEs in the picture are about 10 days younger.

Hi,

We are in Palo Alto California raising beautiful chickens.
We got our first two eggs today, you would have thought it
was christmas by the way I reacted.

We are looking to re home Clyde as Palo Alto doesn't allow roosters.
Any ideas welcome.

Leslie

it's my understanding that the slower the feathering, the better the lacing...unless you think it's weirder than that...
