California - Northern

Hello, it's week 3 since someone dropped these off at my door. If anyone is interested, $10 each.

So cute, but too far for me. I hope you find someone.
But he just didn't learn. He tried to attack me over and over even though it was the bucket he hit each time. I started yelling at him and shaking the bucket in a threatening way while walking toward him. Monet's comment was, "Mom, you sure make funny noises when a rooster attacks you." Thanks for the help, Kid!
Ha, sounds like something my brothers would do to my mom.

Never really know what may set an animal off. I've seen dogs and cats go nuts over the stupidest things. I cant imagine that birds are any better.
My 6 year old barred rock hates the cordless drill. We thought it was the noise but we forgot and left it in the coop and when we came back he was giving the drill a major thumping!

I'm finally on my computer, so I can get my YouTube links

Last Sat, I lost one of my oldest hens.  She was a hatchery Silver-laced Wyandotte and was 4 1/2 yr old.  She seemed fine when I let the chickens out at 6:30 and I saw her eating the wet feed with supplements that I give them at around 7.  2 hours later, Monet found her dead in the middle of the yard......  The prelim report came in last night.  The result was death due to intra-abdominal hemorrhage secondary to liver rupture (Fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome).  They said that she was an over-conditioned hen with lots of fat. ...... Does anyone have experience with counteracting this condition?

Not in chickens, but Amazons are prone to Fatty Liver Disease. This article has info on how, why, causes, what to do-though the diet may need to be tweaked for chickens. http://www.holisticbirds.com/pages/fld0502.htm

Is sand easier to keep bug free?
Have it in 2 coops so far and love it!
Not sure about bugs though.
For some reason my dog likes to eat the clean sand.
Gotta get her vitamins, guessing she's craving some minerals.
I love sand though it can get dusty. larger sand is better.
I would only use sand in a open or very well ventilated coop

Hey There,
I'd like to invite anyone to join us for the Heirloom Festival in Santa Rosa next week. On Tuesday, Sept 9th, is the poultry judging, lectures, etc., and we'll meet for a picnic lunch at noon, at the tables in front of the racetrack, Sonoma County Fairgrounds. I'll have a tablecloth and balloons, so look for us chicken folk! This will be the fourth or fifth gathering...when the festival started, we started getting together for a picnic.
Hope to see you all! http://theheirloomexpo.com/

Dawn

ill be there looking for Spanish Goats
Not to make light of the situation but why is it that everything always seems to happen on a Friday afternoon or a holiday weekend where you are forced to wait to get things answered.

Sorry to hear about the Bresse. I remember you agonizing about which one to keep.
i hear you there

I cannot bring myself to apologize for picture spam this time.
All I could do was scream "NO!" and fall down crying when I found you lifeless. I spent a good portion of yesterday and today crying because I will never again see you come running every time I called your name, I'll never again see you fly up to eat from the food pail as I carried it back to the coop. I wish I could see you just one more time walking through my house when the back door got left open. I wish you would fly over the fence again just so you could go scratch around in the grass while my dog tries to herd you back to the coop - and you totally ignore her because you know she's all bark and no bite. I love how you liked to perch on my arm, and I love how you always started 'talking' every time you'd see me. You will always be my favorite bird, there will never be another you.
"I love you every day. And now I will miss you every day."
Rest in peace my sweet Carolina.

Sorry for your loss.

NOTICE: We're closing this to new submissions on Sunday, 9/7, so make sure you have your submissions in by the end of the day Sunday!

We need your BEST Chicken Pics!!!

It's already time for us to start getting your pictures for the 2015 BYC Calendar!

We're getting getting started even earlier this time to make sure everyone gets a chance to enter their pics into the contest! We're not sure when we're going to close off the submissions, but we'll definitely keep everyone posted in this thread once we determine a submission deadline.

Submit your pictures to this next year's calendar:

1) Find a HIGH RESOLUTION (at LEAST 3,000 pixels wide & 2,000 pixels tall) picture that is very clear, clean, and doesn't have people in it.
2) Reply and upload your picture to this thread.
3) No watermarks, text, etc. on the image
4) By submitting your pictures you agree that you are granting BYC license to edit and use the images in the calendar, promotions, and for other BYC purposes, etc.
5) Limit of 2 submissions per user, so choose your very best pictures!!

Remember, make sure you have a clear high resolution image (at LEAST 3,000 pixels wide and 2,000 pixels tall... but even higher resolution is better)! Our system will create a thumbnail of your image, but the full sized image is still maintained and kept on our system.

Here is an image of our 2011 calendar pics:

A few notes:
  1. We've been known to send a free calendar to those who get their pics chosen... so, maybe it will happen again this year.
    wink.png
  2. Remember, only 2 submissions per member, and make sure you upload VERY HIGH RESOLUTION images that we can use for print!
  3. Regarding copyright & license: We are very sensitive and careful about respecting copyright of other peeps' work. We want to make sure we have your permission to use the photo for the calendar and for other BYC related uses. You retain ownership of your image and can continue to use it however you want. By submitting your pictures to this thread you are simply granting BYC license to use the images for BYC related purposes.

Regarding contest timing, judging, etc:

Once we get a lot of submissions we'll begin the judging process. Here's how the judging process will probably work:

  1. Our team will go through and filter out all the submissions that don't meet the requirements for the calendar (takes about two weeks after the deadline for submissions)
  2. We'll gather all the links to the images together and we'll go through and rate the pictures (I'm guessing it will probably be around 100+ pictures and take a couple weeks)
  3. Once all the pictures are rated, our team will review the top submissions and choose the 13+ images that will end up in the calendar. (about a week)
  4. Then the images go into the design and printing process and head into our store (about 3-5 weeks)
  5. We hope to have the calendars in our store by the end of October!
